Chapter 374
by
The Other Guy
Just call you Florence 'magic isn't cheating' Nightingale.
Four hours later and you are finished
You take a seat on the ground where an injured woman was just laying. You aren't exhausted physically or magically, the amount of magic you transferred was tiny. What you are is emotionally tired. You had to build trust with everyone, sure it got easier as people started to see you healing others but it still took some time. Also you had to pull bits of wood, plaster glass and who know what else out of people as you returned their aura so they could actually heal. You thought about using disintegrate on the debris inside people but wood is mostly water, and people are mostly water. You really didn't want to risk a spell spreading to a person.
Farrah offered you a bit of bread with honey on it and a mug of water. You took both and gave her a thankful smile as you ate and drank. She'd proven invaluable, helping pull debris from people and talking with them, helping them trust you. She never brought up the Church to anyone, never mentioned anything relating to faith in fact.
"Do you help with these sorts of things often?" You asked, finishing off the food and drink.
"Whenever there's an accident at the docks or workhouse. Healing and helping others is the purpose of a Mother." Farrah sounded immensely proud of herself. "And I like helping people. It's how I found my faith." She offered you another piece of bread and honey. You took it and she got some for herself as well.
"How did you? Find your faith I mean, couldn't have been in the Capital." You ask as the people around you started packing up the field hospital.
"I was," she paused and looked at you a moment, "I'm sure you've better things to do my Lord."
"Not really." You answered, showing her your earnest interest as you chew on some bread.
She smiled warmly at you. "Well, I was traveling, a performer with a troop, always looking after everyone and making sure they don't get hurt, and if they did making sure it wasn't too bad." She sighed wistfully, happy memories rippling around her aura. "At one of our shows a Mother came to watch and talk with us. She wanted to travel with us to spread the Mother's Love. We agreed and the two of got to know each other. Every time I went to her services and heard the Mother's words I felt Her presence." The memories turned melancholy. "When we arrived in a city with an actually Church I went and asked to join. I spent a few years as an acolyte then came here, my home to try and spread the Mother's Love." A bit of sadness entered her. "Truthfully I hadn't felt the Mother's presence ever since arriving here, not until you came in my door." She gave you a warm smile. "Thank you Christopher," she grabbed your hand softly, "for everything you've done."
You smiled at her, having some mixed feelings about Clare's sister using the religion to her advantage until you realised she might be more involved in its inception than you thought. Clare said she wasn't the Mother of All herself but maybe the Mother had been a champion or something of the sort. "What happened to your troop?"
"Oh, they moved on without me." She let go of your hand and patted her knees. "Whenever they come to the Capital we meet up, but they never took to the Mother's teachings." She looked a little sad and stood up. "Do you need anything?"
You stood up and gave her back the mug. "No thank you. Is that everyone or are there anymore we need to look at?" You looked around at the now mostly cleaned up beds. There were still some bloody bandages on the ground and a few bed frames set up. It was only as one was folded up and carried away did you realise they had built a field hospital in a few hours, and had injured people ready for and post treatment. "Did you set this whole thing up?"
"Of course." Farrah said putting your mug into a box. "Is something wrong?" She looked around the hospital and you did as well. The other women helping to clean up you recognised from the Church. "I've never had so much help before. Normally it's just me and some husbands trying to offer their wives magic."
You looked back at Farrah and felt kinda bad about yourself. You'd only seen her at the church and aside from her baby you it hadn't occurred that she had a life outside of that. "No." You said warmly, looking around at everyone something did occur, "Actually, I might have some suggestions." You would be the first to admit you weren't exactly an expert on the medical field however you did have something Farrah didn't, experience with wounds in a non-magical world where people can get infections because they don't magically heal. "I'll make some notes and get them too you as soon as I can." You can hardly talk through things here, she doesn't have anything to take notes with and you're going to need to stop and start as you try to pull back all the knowledge you haven't had in years.
"Thank you." She bowed slightly and you saw her look at your missing hand. You'd been so focused you'd actually forgotten it was missing.
"Oh right, I'll just need some to do for me what I did for all of them." You saw Farrah prepare to offer her help but held up a hand. "I'd love for you to help but it's a bit more complicated than it would be." She looks at you expectantly. "Right," you push out a breath, "ok, when I return someone's aura I'm giving them a part of my magic, you've felt that yourself," Farrah nods along, "but I'm also giving them some of my non-selfconsciousness, my understanding of how my body functions. In order to regrow my hand you'd need to be contain my aura but also provide enough knowledge on how to reconstruct the bones, muscles, skin and everything else that goes into a hand working."
Farrah opens her mouth but closes it, you could see her aura was a little insulted at the assumption she didn't understand any of them but you were also, you, so she held her tongue. "I see."
"Hey where are Oriana and Auria, I'd figured they'd be here." You hope she won't mind the diversion.
"The nobles who live in the Capital have all be summoned back to their houses. Oriana wanted to stay with me, but she was." Farrah looked at her helpers. "A little too devout. So I told her to go home."
Yeah that makes sense, and explains why this place is so empty. "Where are you going now?" You ask as the rest of the hospital has been packed up and is being carried out of the gates.
"Back home, this has been more than enough excitement for today and my daughter is over due of a feeding. I hope Margret's been ok looking after her." Farrah mutters to herself as she picked up the chest she'd put the mugs in. "Will you be able to attend Church this weekend?" She asked brightly.
"I," you look around the deserted academy, "am not sure." Farrah gave you an understand nod and pat on the still intact arm. "Until next time Mother."
"Until next time Stud." Farrah said with a bow and walked towards the gate. You heard the gate guard give her a fond farewell.
You headed back to the dorm, it should be lunch time and you figure Asune and Vatarie will be there.
Lunching with the girls?
Reborn into Calitian
You are reborn into another world of magic and fantasy. How you live is your choice, the consequences are as well.
The world of Calitian is a world of magic whose sentient inhabitants vary from human to decidedly not. You are rather unexpectedly reborn into this world however you do not get the expected god delivered spiel about said rebirth so you are on your own. This should be interesting.
