Julie was a single mother. Her daughter Ari had been a handful ever since her father had left them. Ari was 18 now and had moved from one form of rebellion to another over the years. Lately she had taken to making faces behind Julie’s back when she wasn’t looking. Julie cleaned tables at a local tavern and pizza joint for a living. It wasn’t much, but just the two of them didn’t require a lot. Sometimes she would bring Ari to work with her, just to keep an eye on her. Tonight, was such a night. She quicky turned around and practically ran for the bathroom. What the hell? She couldn’t open her mouth. It wasn’t like her face was paralyzed, or glued together somehow. It was just stuck in that ridiculous position. In the bathroom, looking in the mirror, she looked like a nut job. With her cheeks sucked in and her lips vertical. She poked a finger in her mouth and tried to stretch her lips back. They stretched out fine, but when she let go, they snapped right back to the fish face. Oh Shit! That was just an urban legend, right? She wasn’t really stuck like this? What if her friends saw her? She had a vision of trying to go through life with lips like that. No job. No friends. No boyfriend. Everyone calling her a freak. She tried talking, not an intelligible word came out. Her mom had done this somehow. Maybe she could undo it.
