Chapter 3 by Veiled Veiled

What’s your plan?

Focus on your boss

Jill’s suggestion about trying to get in good with your boss before the layoffs seemed like a good one. You wouldn’t have any money problems if you didn’t lose your job. You needed to focus on the root of the problem. The new management at your office. The old manager had been replaced by an older man named Shaun Evans, though naturally you just called him Mr. Evans. He dressed well and had a serious no-nonsense attitude, which made sense. The upper management had wanted someone who would whip this division of the company into shape. You talked with Jill about a few ways you might ingratiate yourself to him. Giving gifts felt like it might come across as attempted bribery, which it kind of would be. Instead you both settled on inviting him over to get to know each other. You would sell it as a chance to get to know his employee better and start off on the right foot. You weren’t really sure if it would work, but it was worth a try.

The next day at the office, Mr. Evans was walking past your desk and no one else was close by. You decided to take the opportunity. “Oh, hey, Mr. Evans, do you have a second?” You asked him. He had been walking with purpose carrying a folder under his arm, and he gave you a quizzical look as you stopped. “Sure. Let’s see… it was Andrew, right?” He asked. You felt a twinge of anxiety at the fact he could barely remember your name. “Yes! Andrew. Or Andy! Some people call me that. I guess Andrew is more professional though.” You said, nervously rambling a little. Mr. Evans’ expression became a little impatient so you quickly continued. “So, uh, listen- since you’re new to the area, and new to this branch of the company, uh… my fiancé and I were wondering if you’d be interested in coming over for dinner.” You offered. He raised an eyebrow. “Oh, wow, how thoughtful. I’m not really sure about this week though… and I didn’t even realize you were engaged.” He said, seeming to brush off the suggestion.

You **** a laugh. “Yeah, I am. Pretty recently though. I’ve got a picture of us here.” You said, pointing to a picture of the two of you which you kept to the side of your desk. He looked at the picture as you nodded. “Proof that she isn’t imaginary.” You joked. He didn’t laugh, but his gaze did linger on the picture, and on her. “Hmm. You know- I am free this weekend. How does Friday night sound?” He asked, still sounding businesslike. You nodded vigorously. “Yeah, for sure! Friday it is. Bring your appetite.” You said, and he briefly chuckled which was rare for him. “Alright, talk to you soon Andy.” He said, nodding and heading off. That was one step of the plan accomplished. Now you just had to make a good impression.

The weekend arrives
