Flashback!

Dr. Bennett looked nervous. She kept adjusting her glasses. She was talking to Linda's parents.

"...very marginal odds of even approaching the state required-"

"Why are we just learning about this now?" her mother asked.

Dr. Bennett wiped her glasses. "Ah, well, see, it hasn't been a remote possibility yet, but it will be. If not now, then very soon."

"Why?" her dad asked.

Dr. Bennett hesitated a moment before answering. "Puberty."

Derek plucked a strand of thyme and held it under her nostrils for several seconds. Linda had mentioned she loved the smell of fresh thyme.

"You're telling me that if my teenage daughter gets too- Linda, blink- gets too aroused she might experience this dopamine overload or whatever?"

Having accomplished her task, Linda was staring at the door with a dull, incurious look. The doctor frowned.

"Well, the informal term is 'hormone bomb'."

He nibbled each earlobe and slowly ran his fingers through her hair. She continued to stare.

"And it's not reversible?" her father asked.

"There's a 0% success rate. Look, let's not catastrophize. This isn't something that could ever happen without obsessive amounts of stimulation. Have you heard about Ana Benson?"

"Yeah, yeah. She was in the truck for-"

"Six hours," the doctor said. "Linda, wake up and listen to me. You need to hear this too."

"Six hours with the truck running. Not running smoothly. She was a teenager with a-"

"Enough! She ended up fucking a truck!"

"Unfortunately," Dr. Bennett sighed, "the effect is always the same. Attachment to whomever or whatever triggered it."

Derek climbed in bed next to Linda. He was naked and exhausted. He took one last glance at her beautiful body lying peacefully next to him.
