Chapter 8
by croland
What does Ruby need done first?
Fix the production mess of her identity change
"First I need you to tell me what that means to you." Ruby said, testing out her theory.
"I have a name. Roberta Johnson. My identity is defined by being your sister and the ultimate fixer. I am younger than you, and look up to you. I love you, and would never betray you. I am now also your fixer, the ultimate fixer. That means I have all of the skills and knowledge any human being could have required to make any problem you need go away."
"Do you have any memories of us growing up together?" Ruby said.
"Of course not. I only just became your sister and ultimate fixer. All memories prior to that are either of me being Ruby Johnson, or an empty husk. Even our parents won't remember anything about a Roberta Johnson prior to the my creation, no one will care. Unless you change my identity again, from now on everyone will accept that I am your younger sister and the ultimate fixer. Now please give me something to do. I don't yet have any other clients, and I find myself **** to fulfill my function. You did, after all, make it a fundemental part of my identity, sis." Roberta said.
"Well don't fret sis," Ruby said chuckling at her own cleverness. "It seems that after I obtained your old identity it threw production into a tizzy. My agent has been calling me non-stop and everyone is freaking out. I need you to make this go away."
"Oh is that all?" Roberta said, tilting her head, seemingly disappointed in the 'simplicity' of the task. "We both remember how handsy the director of this feature can be with some of the PAs, so I can always **** him if he makes a stink, but as an Executive Producer yourself, you can try to mollify him with less drastic measures. The producers are mostly worried about your commitment and about making money. Your contract only extends through this movie, and the TV spin-off. We can dangle the prospect of signing on for an additional three sequels to distract them. I know when _I _was Ruby I was tired of making these action films, so don't fret if the idea of staying on for more of these doesn't interest you either. We don't need you to sign anything yet, and by the time they're finished scoping out writers, and directors, for possible sequels we can always back out. This should be taken care of within the hour. Is there anything else I can do?"
Ruby smiled as she walked through her trailer. It hadn't seemed like anything special in her memories, but to the new Ruby it was marvelous. But she wasn't just taking a tour for novelty's sake. She finally found her red leather Spumoni handbag. She was relieved, and quickly took out the wallet. All of the credit cards were still in her own name, thankfully, but the driver's license that had her old body's face on it now read 'Roberta Johnson.' Quite handy how that worked. She replaced it with her own license that now reflected her identity and handed back the old Diana's purse to her new sister.
"Nothing for myself. Since I created this new identity for you, I suppose you don't have any money or a home of your own. I can support you for now, but make sure you try to actively take on new clients. Now that you're objectively the best fixer in the world, I'm sure you can charge celebrities, CEOS, and any other wealthy people with problems quite a hefty sum for your services. As my loyal sister, you will of course, tell me any useful secrets you may learn along the way. Feel free to keep all the money you want, and if maybe even try developing and discovering your own personality outside of your work and familial relations." Ruby said.
"Why would I want a personality beyond being the ultimate fixer and your sister?" Roberta said, with genuine wonder.
Ruby sighed. She had hoped giving her a name would solve that problem. However it seemed that the only way for a sticker to make someone a real person was to use an existing identity. At least Roberta was a bit more human than just a husk. Now she was just the poorly written side-character. That had its advantages, but Ruby wondered how far it extended, and what problems it may cause.
"Because little sis, you will be spending a lot of time with other people. If you're not a fully-fleshed out personality, that might draw attention to yourself and me. Which would be bad for us both." Ruby said.
"I see, that is a valid point. I can use my old memories of being you to better emulate a full identity though. When dealing with clients I will be terse and professional, to avoid overly long conversations." Roberta said.
"That's good for now, but it will look suspicious if all you do is work. To better maintain your job you'll need to maintain your cover that you're an ordinary person. You'll also need to establish new contacts to continue to accumulate information and relationships that will help your profession, and you'll need to seem completely human to those people. That means going to parties, restaurants, going on dates, establishing a normal life for someone in your position. Besides, I don't want you to be a copy of me, now that I'm the real Ruby Johnson. The more you engage with other people the more personality I want you to develop. Look for traits you find admirable in others and emulate them. Who knows? Maybe one day you'll find yourself with a personality of your own." Ruby said.
Roberta thought about that for a moment and laughed.
"Okay Ruby, if you say so. I feel much more at peace with this reduced identity, but I see your logic. I'll get to work on that right away, as I manage your production hiccup. In the meantime I suggest resting and recuperating in your trailer. Unless you need anything else?" Roberta said.
Ruby liked the idea of not having to go back on set just yet, but didn't like the idea of just sitting around waiting. Now that she was rich, powerful, and famous she was eager to keep exploring the perks of her position. Plus she still had a stack of stickers.
"I agree staying in the trailer for now is probably for the best, but it's lonely and boring here on my own. There's someone I need you to find for me, tell them I want to see them here immediately." Ruby said with a twinkle in her eye
Who will Ruby lure into her trailer?
