Chapter 10 by Papas_Liebling Papas_Liebling

First Cracks

Elise noticed it first.

Daniel poured juice into his morning coffee instead of milk. He froze halfway through the motion when he realized it. Stared at the mug like it had betrayed him.

Then, too quickly, he laughed it off.

“Didn’t sleep well,” he said.

Elise watched him over the rim of her own cup.

“That’s your explanation for everything this week.”

“It’s been a busy week.”

“Yesterday you felt too sick to get to work. That's totally not normal.”

Daniel nodded, already disengaging from the conversation. His attention drifted toward the hallway, where sounds upstairs suggested Claire was awake.

Elise followed his gaze.

“You’ve been doing that a lot,” she said.

“Doing what?”

“Paying more attention to Claire than to me.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened slightly.

“That’s not true.”

It was automatic. The denial came before the thought.

Elise didn’t respond. She simply observed him.

She realized that something strange was going on inside him.

Yet, she didn’t know what his strange behavior meant.

Yesterday, he had answered a text with a reply that didn’t match the question. As if he had something else in mind.

Something—or someone?

She felt a flicker of confusion.

She would have loved to talk everything through with him. But as soon as the conversation got serious, he backed away.

And when she pointed his mistakes out to him, he always reacted the same way.

Denial.

Then defensiveness.

Then distance.

“What’s wrong, Hon?” Elise said finally.

Daniel exhaled through his nose.

“I’m fine.”

“You already said that.”

“And I meant it.”

Elise studied his face.

There was something strained beneath the surface now. Not anger. Not even stress, exactly.

Something like effort.

Like he was constantly holding himself in place.

“I think you need to slow down,” she said more gently.

“I can’t right now.”

“Why not?”

The question landed heavier than intended.

Daniel looked at her.

His gaze softened.

For a fraction of a second, she thought he might answer honestly.

Instead, he nodded once.

“I’ll manage.”

He turned away before she could respond.

Elise stayed where she was, silently watching him moving around the kitchen—too careful now, as if even ordinary actions held some danger.

When Claire came downstairs a few minutes later, Daniel straightened immediately.

Too quickly.

Too visibly.

And Elise noticed that, too.

What's next?
