Finish the video, dismiss the class and calm Abigail down

There’s no point pressing Abigail. If she wants to talk to someone, she can talk to someone. That someone is unlikely to be you.

“Everyone, pay attention to the video,” you tell the girls. “Silence.” You have to shout that several times before the girls obey. The lure of gossip is strong. Returning to the previous attitude is impossible.

When the video ends you still have fifteen minutes of class, but it’s clear Abigail’s not coming back. Instead, you dismiss the class. They’re all keen to go.

You watch them leave before knocking on Abigail’s door.

“Mrs Sorgood, Abigail, is everything ok?”

For a few moments there’s no reply. Then the click of the lock and the door opens. Abigail stands there, looking small and vulnerable. She’s clearly been crying, her face is a mess, her hair is a mess, her hands are in constant motion. She gestures you should come in, and she shuts the door behind you.

“Thanks for taking the class, I don’t know whether I can face them at the moment.”

“What’s wrong?” She stands there dithering, clearly caught on the knife-edge of choice.

“It’s nothing.”

“Clearly, it’s not nothing. I know we haven’t got off on the best of terms, but if there’s anything I can do?”

She doesn’t answer. Her brown eyes are filled with tears and worry, but it’s clear she doesn’t trust you. But she needs comfort. You pull out your phone and text Spencer and Anissa, telling them to come to Abigail’s office as soon as possible. Spencer is the first to arrive, just before the bell rings. She takes one look at Abigail and rushes to embrace her. That’s enough to set Abigail crying. Anissa arrives soon afterwards and joins the group hug.

You feel uncomfortable watching these three women hug each other. You’re left out, knowing joining would be wrong, but wanting to. You anonymously walk out the room, leaving them to their comfort.
