Chapter 20 by omaewa omaewa

Choose someone specific? Or leave it up to fate?

Finding the 'diamond' in the rough

Considering your options. it wasn't like you had a specific choice in mind. In fact, it was by design that you would choose a random test subject. But deep down, you knew that you didn't want it to be totally random. Namely, you want a subject that had a good social standing, not some loser who was struggling with life. Who knows who will pick up the ring if left in the food court or the restrooms? The jewelry store, with its beautiful displays, seemed to attract the type of test subject you would like.

Of course, you had to be careful navigating the jewelry store, seeing a security guard standing around the door and security measures installed throughout the store. Any ideas of swapping rings went out the door, and you figured that the best strategy was to leave your ring on a counter somewhere, hoping someone would mistake it as a lost ring or something. Not the best plan, but it may just work.

Walking meekly into the store, you pulled out the yellow ring and was about to place it on the counter when a lanky sales associate with short brown hair, dressed in a sleek charcoal grey suit, interrupted you. From his looks, he seemed to be in his late 20s, appearing quite enthusiastic with his position. After he asked if he could help with anything, perhaps purchasing for a special someone, you quickly blushed as you shook your head, your only reply being that you just wanted to check out the ware. For a moment, you thought you saw the salesman wince, but he quickly donned his classic smile before saying that he will be available whenever he needs assistance and walking off.

You felt yourself breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that his plan would fail had he noticed his ring. A part of you was concerned if anyone will figure out the special properties of the ring if they looked close enough. But you quickly reassured yourself: who would suspect that the ring had possession abilities? If anything, they would be wondering about the owner of the lost ring.

Looking around once more to check on any lingering eyes, you laid down the yellow ring before nonchalantly walking out the store. Despite not doing anything illegal, you still felt nervous, especially when walking past the guard at the door. Instead, he gave a small smile at you, wishing you a great evening. You gave a quick gesture before walking back to your car. You figured that you should figure out where you should place the last remaining ring in your collection.

However, curiosity, anxiety, or a mixture of both clouded your mind as you settled into your car. Who would take the ring? What would happen if no one took it? Many questions exist, and all were valid ones to ask for such a test. Perhaps you should answer them before placing your last ring?

Test the yellow ring, or continue with the red ring?
