Chapter 26 by Bartw32rt

How does Lauren react?

Figuring stuff out

Lauren’s money didn’t just come from nowhere. As a biochemist she is doing research on so called ‘metahumans’. A seeming subspecies of the homo sapiens. Though the weird thing is, they don’t seem to share any significant DNA trails. So they have developed to look like a human. Even act like one. While they were of a complete different branch. It was both fascinating as it was horrific. Since these ‘metahumans’ seemed to mimic the behavior of a human so well, that Lauren almost felt pity for them. They were helt in these reinforced glass containers while experiments were conducted on them. Most of those were centered on their stem cells. Which seemed to be able to react and mimic certain attributes after it had copied it from its victim.

The thing is, whoever the ‘metahuman’ would bite, could however get some positive attributes. Though they were a minimum of sorts. Since the stem cells a ‘metahuman’ is injecting in their victim is able to rebuild cells. Though the effects of this were still tested. It could both be a fix for cancer cells and quite a lot of born deficiencies they could fix with this breakthrough. The only backdrop was that you’d have to kill the ‘metahuman’ before its victim would imprint itself on them.

Since one of her colleagues let herself be injected with a few stem cells as a test. Without being able to see which metahuman it was from. She had, in her reports, thought about using it to regain her youth. To see if it was possible. And it seemed to be successful to just inject herself with it instead of the metahuman doing it. For that one moment they thought they had cracked the code. The bitter truth came the following week as her colleague had entered. Throughout that week she had become younger and younger. While her dresscode became a bit less professional by the day. At first it would be just her top buttons that would be open. Everyone seemed to forgive her for that, because you don’t look young everyday. Then some syringes had gone missing. As in the end she had apparently walked in with only a blouse and a short dress. Opened up one specific cell with a ‘metahuman’ in it. The same from which the stem cells had come from. Grinding herself against him as she let him willingly bite her in her neck.

The stories had then taken a turn. Some claiming that both she and the ‘metahuman’ had then been killed off. It was a daunting story for sure. But what was an even crazier theory, was one that one of Lauren’s colleagues had told her.

“They let the meta sleep in. But honestly, nobody has actually seen Martha’s ****. I believe she is downstairs in the restricted section. Only someone with your clearance can look into that”

So as Lauren got out of her expensive house. First walking towards the passively standing figure that she recognizes as Stan. The only person in the world that somehow meant something to her. Feeling how he connected her to a goal she didn’t yet know. Perhaps it was love, it couldn’t be placed anywhere else. She feels how a shock goes through her as she sees in what apparent state he is. Standing there as if at any moment he could collapse. Which then seems to happen as she thinks this. Immediately she feels her legs reacting to it, almost instinctively. Gravel sliding into the black slippers she was wearing. To not feel the pain of them biting into her feet. It feels as if her whole body thinks it’s dying too as it sees Stan collapse.

The boy that grew up with her. The boy that had stubbornly stayed by her side while she hadn’t had any friends. The boy that made her smile with his stupid antics, doing whatever he felt was the right thing. Even if it went against what others thought. It was childish. It was dumb. Perhaps that was what made him so attractive. Though as she got closer, now seeing what his body looked like without much to hide his skin. She knew that he was the same as them. The same as those meta’s. It even became more apparent when her hand connected with his skin. Feeling his muscles in a dormant state react to her touch. Straining to then relax. CD under his skin. When he would wear clothes it would be obscured enough to not be aware of it. But now, it was almost impossible not to see. The muscles he had almost animal like. It had finally started to dawn on her as she grabbed ahold of his massive muscled size. Knowing almost certain that it had to be inhuman.

A tear slides down her face. Here she lay in her favorite salmon pink dressing gown. On her knees in front of the man she trusts most. Only to feel in a way touched inappropriately by that man. His bite. It explained why she liked him. It explained why she wanted to learn yoga and all those weird things. And the problem was: she liked it. The guidelines that he had set out for her were fully ingrained in her routine. She didn’t see a life wherein Stan wasn’t the most important thing on her mind. Even so far as wanting him to be more prominent in his requests in telling her what to do. And thinking about that, Stan hadn’t done anything like that in the slightest. If she was honest to herself, it even hurt her more that he hadn’t.

Lauren also felt quite miserable because of her inability to take him inside of the house. All of his muscles now working against Stan as he was too heavy for Lauren to lift. Luckily one of her neighbors had come out of his house as he had probably seen the whole thing. Helping her grab the big man and lifting him inside. While he didn’t see the abnormality to his skin. Probably because he wasn’t in a secret lab all day trying to figure out a certain genetic code. Lauren sighed as they finally knew to place Stan down on the couch. After which the neighbor said something nice, trying to lift the mood. But Lauren’s thoughts weren’t there. They were still on Stan. His bite. Trying to recall the moment when she had been bitten by him.

The neighbor saw himself out as Lauren seated herself besides her best friend. Even while knowing he was a dangerous species, she couldn’t bring herself to not look at him. To feel somewhat entranced as she looked at Stan who had been so gentle with her. He had been so nice and warm. Not doing what Lauren actually wanted. Close to him she felt so incredibly safe. While also feeling like she is close to an apex predator. The thrill coursing through her veins as excitement pumps in her head. Beating out any logic. Any kind of self preservation. As she gets closer to the beast that is her best friend. Knowingly condemning herself as she inches closer and closer. Her breath held in. Selfishly thinking about what she wants. What she so desperately needs from Stan. As she places her neck against his lips.

How does Stan wake up?
