Quietly you begin to go through the contents in your backpack. The building had seemed vacant when you first made your way into it, but after two nights here you had heard voices and someone using the stairway at the far end. As best you could guess they were coming from one of the apartments about four stories above. Years ago you had learned it's often best to just let people be. There was a good chance who ever was up there had been up there for a while now. Likely several groups of people, as that was common now a days, having come across the building and making it their home. It was easy for anyone to enter a building close a door and be lost to the world. Especially in a city of this size.

But it did make you curious. It just wasn't the right time to wander up there. You were sure they were not raiders, that much you felt sure of. They rarely had their own place away from the rest of the gang. If that were the case this entire building would be under their control and guard. That wasn't the case. After sorting and tossing out the empty cans of food you roll up your second backpack and tuck it down in the bottom of the one you have open. Maybe you would get lucky and need the extra space. A small container with about thirty rounds of ammunition was followed that. Bottled water. Just what you needed. The point was to fill the bag with supplies. You then pause, look between the Glock and the Ruger 10/22. Deciding on the rifle you sling it on your back and kicks all of your things under the bed so it looked like no one was here. Honestly though, the chances of anyone picking this one room out of all the rooms in this building to go into was pretty low.

You had taken one trip up to the roof the previous night. To the east several blocks away you saw lights, some fortifications and what sounded like machines. Generators was the likely guess. It seemed moderately quiet so you hoped it was just a small community of some sort. Maybe see if there was any trade there or even rumors. One thing you most liked about traveling was catching up on all the stories rumors and news. It just felt good.

Then you had the option of the old commercial area. The mall, shops, bars and what were once clubs could be found around there. Another prime area to scavenge around and hopefully come away with something good. It was time to make the best out of this disastrous trip.
