Failing Orientation

Chapter 48 by Suitguy31

They get everyone inside without another word on the street.

Grant’s apartment is too small for the whole pack, so he splits them the way he has been splitting them since the gym: core women in his unit and the one across the hall he already cleared, unclaimed girls in the back bedroom with the door left open, weapons staged where Mary and Olivia can reach them in two steps. Jaz takes the stairwell. Eve takes the landing window. The rest settle into the kind of watchful quiet that only claimed women seem able to hold for long.

Kyle, Jose, and Garret are left in the lot with the Explorer and with Jaycee.

That lasts twenty minutes.

Grant is in the kitchen running water over a chipped glass when Mary’s voice comes sharp from the front room.

“Grant.”

He is already moving.

Down in the lot, the Explorer’s rear door is open. Kyle has Jaycee by the upper arm, pulling her toward the building’s side entrance instead of staying put. Garret is hanging back by the hood, uneasy. Jose has both hands up like he wants no part of whatever this is about to become.

Mary is on the landing with the rifle already up. Olivia is one stair below her. Jaz has the side door covered from inside.

Kyle sees Grant and tries to turn it into a grin.

“Change of plan, man. You got too many bitches already. We’re taking ours and a spare and rolling. You can keep the rest. Fair, right?”

He jerks Jaycee closer and reaches for the unclaimed blonde who froze in the doorway behind Eve.

That is the mistake.

Eve does not give him the blonde. She hits him instead, hard enough that Kyle staggers and loses his grip on Jaycee. Kyle swears, grabs for the pistol tucked in his waistband, and never finishes the motion.

Mary does not wait for a speech.

The shot cracks once in the enclosed lot. Kyle drops like someone cut his strings. He hits the asphalt on his side and does not get up. There is a short, ugly silence after the echo dies. Then only the Explorer’s cooling engine and Jaycee’s shaky breath.

Jose makes a sound in his throat. Garret takes one step back and keeps his hands where everyone can see them.

“Don’t,” Grant says, and the word is enough. “You two stay right there.”

He comes down the stairs slowly. Mary keeps the rifle on the two living men. Olivia moves to Kyle’s body just long enough to kick the pistol away from his fingers. Jaz pulls Jaycee back from the spreading dark on the pavement and puts herself between the girl and the corpse.

Kyle’s eyes are already empty.

Grant looks at Jose and Garret.

“He tried to steal from me in my own lot,” Grant says. “That is not a partnership. That is a raid. You want to follow him, say it now.”

Jose swallows. “No. No, man. That was Kyle. That was all Kyle.”

Garret nods too fast. “We just wanted a place. That’s it.”

“Then you stay in the car until I say otherwise. You do not touch Jaycee. You do not come inside. If either of you so much as looks like you’re reaching for something, Mary finishes what she started.”

They both nod. Jose looks like he might be sick. Garret looks like he finally understands the difference between claiming one girl at a skate park and walking into a house that already has a chain of command.

Grant turns to Jaycee.

She is shaking, but she is not screaming. Claimed women rarely scream for the men who owned them once those men are gone. Her eyes keep flicking from Kyle’s body to Grant’s face, waiting for the new shape of the world.

“Look at me,” Grant says.

She does.

He takes her wrist. Skin to skin. Her pulse is rabbit-fast under his thumb.

“I claim you.”

The change runs through her the way it always does. Her breath catches. Her shoulders drop. The lost, waiting look collapses into something simpler and far more dangerous: belonging. She sways a little toward him, then steadies herself as if her body has just remembered who it is for.

“Yes,” she whispers. “I’m yours.”

“Name.”

“Jaycee.” A tiny pause. “Unless you want it to be something else.”

“Jaycee is fine for now.” He glances at the lot, then back at her. “You don’t take orders from them anymore. You don’t get in that car unless I send you. You stay with Jaz until I tell you where you sleep.”

“Yes, Grant.”

The old loyalty is gone. He can see it leave her. Whatever Kyle told her to like, whatever he told her to endure, it has no hook left. She looks at Jose and Garret the way a person looks at weather: relevant, not beloved.

Mary does not lower the rifle until Jose and Garret are back in the Explorer with the doors shut.

“I told you,” she says under her breath.

“You did.” Grant does not look away from the lot. “Have Olivia and Eve wrap him up and move him before dawn. I don’t want that lying in front of the building. Jaz, take Jaycee upstairs and get her cleaned up. Water, clothes, food. No one else touches her.”

Jaz nods. “Come on.”

Jaycee follows without looking back at the body.

Grant stands in the doorway a moment longer. The night is still too quiet for a city. Somewhere a few blocks over there is another shout, another engine, another man learning the same lesson too late.

Jose watches him through the windshield. Garret stares at the steering wheel.

Grant raises his voice just enough to carry.

“You two are on probation. You eat what we give you. You sleep in the car. Tomorrow we talk about whether you are useful or just leftover. If you run, don’t come back. If you try what he tried, you get what he got.”

He turns and goes inside.

Upstairs, the apartment smells like dust and gun oil and too many people. Jaycee is already in the bathroom with Jaz. Water runs. Mary sets the rifle down but does not go far from it. The unclaimed girls are silent in the back room, pretending they did not just watch a man die for reaching.

Grant sits on the edge of the couch and rubs a hand over his face.

One more claimed woman. Two rattled boys in a borrowed lot. One body that has to disappear before morning.

He is building something. He can feel it. It just keeps costing blood.

Eve appears in the hall.

“She’s asking if you want her tonight,” Eve says quietly. “Jaycee. She asked Jaz to ask you.”

Grant looks toward the bathroom door. He can hear Jaycee answering Jaz in that soft, newly-settled voice claimed women get when the first shock is over and the need to please has already taken the wheel.

“Not yet,” he says. “Let her eat. Let her sleep where Jaz can see her. I want her clear-headed when I decide what she’s for.”

Eve nods. “And the other two?”

“They live until they give me a reason not to.” Grant leans back. “Lock the stairwell. Split the watch. If that Explorer so much as rolls a foot, you wake me.”

“Yes, Grant.”

The building settles around him again. Not safe. Just held.

In the lot below, Kyle does not move. In the bathroom, Jaycee says Grant’s name like it already belongs in her mouth. And Grant, aimless only yesterday, sits in the half-dark and understands the new rule as clearly as the first one:

You can take almost anything on Claim Day.

You just have to be the last man standing when someone else tries to take it back.
