Chapter 20 by Northern Watcher Northern Watcher

What's next?

FA L A girl out of place

Conney was half-way down the bleachers when her eyes filled with malice!

The impact didn't hurt, but she didn't care for some jackass who thought they could get away with throwing something at her!

"You actually came!"

Eye's softening she let out a sigh.

That goofy jock grinned up at her from the bottom of the stairs, soccer ball bouncing back down to his feet.

"Yes, yes I did."

"So what did you think? I told you I was good!"

Luke didn't know why he was so happy to see Conney, her typical neutral expression glued to her face. Yet, actually seeing her stick around the whole practice at least ment something right?

"It's about what I expected honestly, and yes you were very good."

Popping the ball up using his toes, Luke began dribbled it as he spoke.

"Plan is to be the Best! Get picked up by one of the Unis, then scouted by one of the Foot Ball Clubs, then I'm FREE AND SET FOR LIFE!"

Kicking the ball up in the air, Luke tweaked it with a harsh back spin coinciding with his words.

Conney couldn't help but let a smile slip at seeing the spectacle before her. She never really cared about sports, or other physical activities, wasn't her thing. Yet, the way Luke drove on about it, wonderment and surety in his eyes that he'd get there.

It was refreshing.

"A ticket to freedom?"

"Something like that." Hands moving fast, Luke snatched the ball from the air. "You heading home then?"

"Not much else for me to do, that I can't do in my own room."

"Fair enough, where you live anyway?"

"Cornwell Park."

"Sweet! That's on the way to my place, let's go grab my stuff, we can walk home together!"

Conney rolled her eyes, at the needless enthusiasm. "Sure."

Not two steps after the pair was stopped in there tracks.

"Luke! Where are you going? The Club house is that way!"

Glancing back Luke spotted one of the Cheerleaders yelling at him in the distance. He couldn't make out who it was, but he could clearly see there unimpressed pose though, point at where they apparently wanted him to be.

"I'm going home. Gotta be back for supper."

A excuse that did not fly well.

"I hope not with that Drab Bitch!"

Luke let the air escape from his lungs in a short frustrated sigh. How was he supposed to respond to that?

"Better to be a Drab Bitch then a Whore like you!"

Head snapping to his side Luke was shocked to hear the source of that retort. Conney cupping her mouth yelling her insult back as loud as she could. It don't stop there either, opening up her arms she want on!

"Oh wait! Whores get paid!"

Like that, Conney spun on her heels moving on, uncaring about the scene playing out behind her.

Spelled bound he followed after her. Luke couldn't believe it! She'd just said that to a Cheerleader!

Calling out?

Talking back?

Hell! Insulting one of those girls?!

Especially if you weren't a somebody yourself!

It was just unheard of! Yet, here was Conney bobbing along like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Walking back talk mostly revolved around similar topics of lunch, what consorts where coming up this year, if she could maybe help him out in class more regularly, all off topic from the day's hectic events. They arrived infront of a house not too unfamiliar from Luke's own. Modest and typical suburbia, likes his mom's. Though much better kept!

A perfectly groomed yard, anchoring rows upon rows of flower beds, and vegetable gardens were what welcomed all to Conney's home. The exterior of the house was nothing to scoff at either, shiny white rain troughs, a considerable lounge area of a front porch, and was that a fresh coat of paint too!

The list of high maintenance only went on.

"Suppose I'll see you tomorrow then?"

"Ya, you might actually see me in your math class if you look up for once. Maybe on the bleachers again too, it's not a bad place to read at least."

"Alright!"

Horror plastered across Conney's face as she suddenly had to think fast seeing a soccer ball hurtle towards her again! Arms opening up she actually managed to catch it, hugging the ball to her chest.

"What the hell! Stop throwing things at me!"

"Nice catch!" Irritatingly Luke didn't seem to hear her. "That's for you, my first day back ball."

"And what I'm I supposed to do with it?!"

"Keep it!" Conney shuck her head as she watched Luke fire two hand pistols at her while walking away. "For good luck!"

Sigh

Conney looked down at the grass stained sports ball.

Good luck eh?

"Hmmm~ I thought boys were supposed to give good-bye kisses when they walked a young lady home."

"Ugh, Dad." Rolling her eyes Conney brushed off her father's comment.

He'd crept up behind her, blazing pink shirt popping out the top of his dirt covered overalls, dark pencil mustache out lining his toothy smirk.

"Oh come on C Bear! He's a real cutie patootie~"

"Dad!" Conney dug her elbow into his chest as he laughed. "He's just some guys I met today."

"Well that's how it starts sweety~"

Fed up with her middle aged father, Conney sauntered towards the front door, just stopping as she grabbed the handle.

"Is mom home?"

Conney's father looked up from the under construction flower bed that he'd returned to.

"Sorry Sweetie, she said her work trip got extended another week. Why something you need?"

"No." Conney answered naturally stepping inside.

Thank God!
