Chapter 4

Explain the competition

“Welcome to the first-ever Tomboy Pageant!” Bryan said to the group of 50 tomboys gathered around him. They were still unaware of the purpose of the pageant and still thought that the purpose was to show off who was the biggest tomboy. Therefore, they were decked out in jeans, baggy shorts, and there were even a few denim work overalls being worn. Little did they know that they were going to have to shed their rough, masculine exterior if they wanted the big pay day promised.

Brian continued by explaining to them the terms and rules of the pageant, “As you are all aware, you were accepted to this contest because of your own tomboy credentials in addition to your good looks. Among this group are strong-willed and independent women who generally work and participate in male-dominated fields and you all seem to be more comfortable in pants than you would be in more feminine attire.”

The girls all let out a light chuckle at this comment made by Bryan.

“However, if you agree to participate, you will need to know that this ‘pageant’ will not grade you on the credentials that you submitted to us. Instead, you will be asked to shed your more masculine hobbies and attire and adopt stereotypically feminine ones if you want to win.”

The girls were now dumbfounded and shocked. They were lured into this event mainly for the money, sure, but also because they respected the perceived aims of the pageant which they had thought were to provide a space for women who did not adhere to female gender stereotypes.

“I am sure you all are here mainly because you were enticed by the money,” Brian continued. “And the 25 of you that are accepted can expect to receive your $100,000 participation prize when this pageant is complete as long as you give a reasonable effort in every task as determined by our judges. However, the grand prize of $25 million will be given to the tomboy among you that, for the next few months, completely sheds that part of her and acts like the biggest girly girl imaginable both during scheduled pageant events but also outside of these events in her personal life. In order to be one of the 25 participants, you must be accepted into one of the 5 teams. There will be 5 on each team and each team has a theme that you will be expected to adhere to if you want to make that team and if you want your team and yourself to do well. The themes are cheerleading, Kpop, maid, housewives, and ballerinas. You can try out for any of the teams shortly by performing in front of each team’s coach. In addition to the individual competition, there will be a team competition with each member of the winning team receiving an additional $250,000. If you are still interested in participating and want to try for the cheerleading team, please go over to the room adjacent to this one to change into you outfit and to prepare. We will have cheer tryouts first.”
