Chapter 37 by Mmmm102 Mmmm102

Exchange it with a guests necklace

It takes you almost two seconds to hatch a plan. If you're all going to play musical blooms, you might as well lead everyone on a merry dance. Only an idiot would stay, but you're staying. And only an idiot would give up the Bloom once they had it. So that's exactly what you're going to do.

You continue to dance, trying to make Missy's chubby face look as innocent as possible, with a slight smile and a deliberate ruffling of your auburn locks. You clutch Tom closely, pulling on his sleeves to bring him closer. He's still apologetic, casting nervous looks back as the main players at the wedding recompose themselves. Alexandra seems almost gone, and the singer - a Caribbean beauty - is holding her notes gracefully as she tries to gather some composure to the scene.

"I can't believe I did that," Tom mutters to you, oblivious to the fact the Bloom is now around your neck. Perhaps you're against him so tight he can't see it, although you're sure others can.

"Don't worry," you say, full of Missy's general hopefulness before you drop into a whisper. "It's not like I know her very well." You lean up and his him again, reassuring his nerves.

"This has been a strange wedding." Tom says. "Still, nice place, huh?" You smile mousily again, then glance a familiar figure leaving the floor.

"Very. Will you be OK sitting the next dance out? I need to pop to the restroom."

"Oh...uh... sure."

You slip away, through the crowd of the marquee, your eyes focused on the portly, uniformed figure of the Indian lady ahead of you. Nancy, heading back to the main hotel. She'll be perfect. In a few footsteps you catch up with her.

"Excuse me," you say, your pudgy features beaming from under your auburn locks. "Could you direct me to your restrooms? With all this commotion, I need to take a moment."

Nancy, as ever the professional, gives you a pencil-thin smile, and arches her head in agreement.

She doesn't see Missy's friendly smile turn into a sinister grin as she leads you away.

"Oh my... that's the second time today that's happened." Nancy mutters, straightening her uniform, pausing at the mirror to make sure she looks unruffled, with a smile on her face. Her glasses aren't on straight, but in a moment they're fixed in the mirror. She gives a nod, and begins to turn to the door.

She never makes it. In a moment the door opens and one of the Parry cousins - Rebecca, you think (although as they're twins its hard to tell) - steps in. She gives one look to the surroundings, and begins to clutch a small black item in her hand.

"Excuse me," Nancy says, pushing through, partly out into the corridor. Footsteps echo down it, meaning at least someone else is heading in this direction. Rebecca's hand returns to her purse, her eyes still studying the scene.

Missy Chamberland is trying to climb up a stall, stuck awkwardly in the cubicle, her face a mask of pure, dazed confusion at how she got there. Her hands reach up to the sides, struggling for purchase as she tries to climb up out of her salmon dress, clearly loose and unzipped at the back. Rebecca turns and twists, looking down at Nancy as the older woman steps out into the corridor.

Rebecca smiles, staring at the trail of golden chain hanging from Nancy's coat pocket. The same golden chain that houses the Scarlet Bloom. She waits until Nancy leaves, then watches her begin to walk slowly down the corridor.

"Uh...what...what happened?" Missy stumbles and slurs. Rebecca turns to her.

"You were drinking too much and you slipped. I helped you in here."

"Oh... I was? I mean, I don't remember..."

"Of course you don't remember," Rebecca snaps too sweetly. "You've been drinking too much. Now tidy yourself up and get back to the party, hmm?"

With that, Rebecca spins on the spot, ignoring the uncertain Missy, before slipping out of the door, and after Nancy. No doubt waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Missy looks confused for a moment.

Then you smile maniacally, and burst out laughing using the portly girl's face. You step to the mirror, and flick back her auburn hair, sighing with satisfaction. You slipped a fake on to Nancy. The poor woman never saw it coming, and now, completely unaware about the game being played, she's leading your pursuers around the hotel. You laugh again, this time with a deeper voice than Missy usually manages. That was almost too easy. Now everyone's looking for the wrong person, and will be playing the wrong game of switcheroo all night.

You hear footsteps down the corridor, and pause again. It's not Rebecca's, or Nancy's, footfall pattern. You look in the mirror and chew Missy's lip. You could stay as her. Nobody would suspect that you'd do that.

But everyone saw you stumble in to Alexandra; there's a clear chain of events linking you to Missy Chamberland, and it might mean someone else tries to become her temporarily. And you're already halfway out of your salmon-pink dress...
