Chapter 17
by Mythen Oakhier
Anything Wrong?
Everything seems Normal
As John stood at the front of the bus, looking for a seat, he noticed that there seemed to more empty seats than usual. However, much to his dismay, the two people that made his life miserable were still there.
Frank was noticeably subdued this morning, only calling out half hearted insults as John passed. Vanessa, on the other had, sneered at him and struck up a conversation with a couple of her cohorts, speaking loud enough for everyone to hear, as she went on and on about how Frank said that John had a baby dick.
John sat miserably in the back of the bus, and watched with Observe his relationship score with some of the girls go down even further.
Used to being the last one to get on the bus, John was unprepared as the bus stopped just before the river to let a new student get on. She was wiry, that sinewy strength without building muscles. Her raven black hair, so dark that it almost seemed blue, was cut in a cute pixie cut fashion that left her slender neck bare. She stood the same height as John did, so she wasn’t as intimidating as Moonstone had been, but when she turned those blood red eyes on him, John felt a shiver run down his spine.
As she looked for a seat, she passed by Vanessa, who took that moment to extol how much bigger Frank was than John. This caused John to let out a weary sigh of defeat. Reluctantly he used Observe on the new girl as she strode confidently forward towards him.

John could almost feel Gaia sticking her tongue out at him and it made him smile as he read the Observe report. He also wondered if the only reason that she had a relationship score with him was to spite Vanessa. But as the strange woman with the red eyes sat down next him and smiled, he found that he didn’t really care what her reasoning was.
The rest of the trip was quiet, beyond the normal noise of the teens chatting with each other. Despite the fact that she sat next to him, the strange new girl didn’t speak to him, and while that was odd, in itself, he checked the stats of the people around him, and noticed that with some of the girls that had lost relationship points with him from what Vanessa was saying his relationship score was slowly rising back up.
Once at school John disembarked and headed towards his first class of the day, and the part that he was most apprehensive about, History with Mrs. Wentworth. Yesterday had opened his eyes to many unusual things, not the least of which was the strange actions of Mrs. Wentworth. He found his normal seat in the center of the class, and waited to see what would happen.
“I know that we were supposed to study Roman culture for the next block, but I have decided to switch it up a little, and instead we are going to talk about the persecution of those believed to be involved in witchcraft, both here and abroad,” Mrs. Wentworth began before dimming the lights and starting the projector.
The lecture lasted for the entirety of the class, and more than once did John see golden roses intermingled with the cross of the Inquisition. He began to wonder if that was significant, and when he glanced over to ask Moira about it, he saw her fists clenched, and could practically hear her teeth grinding in anger.
“Would John Newman and Moira Brighton stay behind for a minute,” Mrs. Wentworth called just before the bell rang and the mad dash to exit the class began. Moira and John approached her desk, waiting to see what the witchy teacher had instore for them this time.
Once the three of them were alone Mrs. Wentworth smiled and sat down on the other side of the desk. “Did you know that the Brighton’s don’t like to be reminded of their failures,” Mrs. Wentworth began, and John could practically feel the rage that flowed from Moira, “They think themselves perfect and above everyone. Especially if they are wrong and grab an innocent child that had nothing to do with the Abyss.”
Confusion dulled the anger in Moira’s eyes as she tried to figure out what this was about. While John wanted nothing more than to get away from what appeared to be a keg of gunpowder next to someone that was juggling flaming torches.
“I know that she made an appointment with you John,” Mrs. Wentworth finally looked at him, “Although I bet it was more of a command. I would like to invite you to listen to what I have to say afterwards. I have a feeling that you will be more than open to hearing both sides.”
“Scarlet Witch, know that your days are numbered if you try anything like what happened yesterday again,” Moira ground out between her teeth before she turned and walked towards the door. The door slammed into the wall loudly as Moira disappeared, off to her next class.
“There are somethings that are going on that I don’t understand,” John said thoughtfully as the teacher and students eyes trailed after the fuming Moira, “And I would like your help as well as hers, and even Moonstone's, to understand this new world that I have been dropped into.” Mrs. Wentworth nodded her approval at his statement before handing him a pass to his next class. As he walked away he got a pop-up.
