Escalation

The bartender glanced at Steve, like he wanted to make sure he hadn’t misunderstood.

Steve looked perfectly calm on the surface. Only the pulse beating hard in his neck suggested otherwise.

He picked up Marie’s glass, poured what was left into his own, and took a slow sip.

It wasn’t a dramatic gesture.

But it made one thing painfully clear:

Marie was no longer his guest.

The bartender gave a small nod and stepped even closer, his hand settling around Marie’s arm.

“Up.”

Not a request.

Whatever professional politeness he’d worn before was gone now.

Marie froze.

Her eyes stayed locked on Steve. Some part of her still expected him to laugh. To lean back and admit this was all some twisted joke.

He said nothing.

He lifted the glass to his lips again without drinking.

Just watching her.

And that was the moment Marie realized he meant every second of this.

Slowly, she stood. Her knees felt unstable beneath her.

The bartender pulled her against him. Even through their clothes she could feel the heat coming off his body. He smelled like liquor, citrus, and something underneath that she could only describe as unmistakably male.

“Turn around.”

His voice had gone quiet now.
Too quiet.

And somehow that was the most unsettling part of all — the effortless way he took control, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Marie obeyed.

Why am I doing this?

The answer came instantly: Because she was scared.

Except that answer wasn’t true anymore.

Her body had already started making decisions of its own.

And fear was definitely no longer the reason.

The bartender’s hand pressed against the small of her back, guiding her forward.

Behind her, in the lounge, Marie heard the soft clink of glasses. Low conversations. Someone laughing across the room.

No one paid attention to what was happening at their table.

Or worse:

Maybe everyone noticed — and nobody thought there was anything unusual about it at all.
