Eric's Saga Continued
Eric’s saga, and it was a saga, was a little weird, a little wild, and a little heartbreaking.
Once the Lucy situation had cleared out, he’d apologised to Beth and explained they’d dated earlier in the summer but it had been kind of toxic and he’d gotten himself out of the situation. Beth had been surprisingly understanding, cracking a joke about how she had to deal with her roommate on a regular basis and she was used to a little crazy, but that she did have something she wanted to talk with Eric about so they should grab a table.
That, of course, took Eric into anxiety town because he thought he was calling the date to talk about something.
They got their table, did the small talk to try and get over what had just happened, and had just ordered their food as Eric was working himself up to open the conversation when Beth’s roommate showed up. Apparently, she’d been paranoid about Beth spending all weekend not at home, and then going out again on a Monday even though they were supposed to hang out. Ol’ Crazy Eyes, as Sabrina insisted she be called, was about to get all territorial as she stormed towards their table when she saw who her roommate was with.
Thus began the second shouting match of the night, this time as Ol’ Crazy Eyes went from 0 to 100 in a screeching fit where she literally flipped a table - not theirs, just some innocent bystanders caught in the chaos. With food and drinks going everywhere, and the table falling onto another lady, Ol’ Crazy Eyes ended up getting slapped across the face by that lady’s friend. That could have led to an actual bar fight, but the bouncers got there just in time to grab Ol’ Crazy Eyes and stop her as she swung at the other lady. Then both of those ladies got kicked out while a waitress tried to manage the chaos of the flipped table, and a bartender came over and asked Eric and Beth to leave because this was the second incident they’d been a part of, even if they hadn’t technically done anything. Considering both Ol’ Crazy Eyes and the other lady and her group were shouting about pressing charges, things were about to get even more complicated out in front of the bar as the cops were called.
Eric managed to convince the bartender to let them out the back entrance so they wouldn’t need to walk by Ol’ Crazy Eyes, and they made their escape - then, once they were in the back alley behind the building, Beth checked her phone and made sure she wasn’t sharing her location with her roommate, which she wasn’t, but she did find an AirTag in her purse.
That led to needing to go back around to the front of the building and waiting for cops to get there and start taking statements. Beth had double worries - the first being that her crazy roommate had been tracking her, which was definitely illegal, but second was that she would head back to their place and trash her stuff. That meant that she and Eric had to volunteer to make statements - and since witnesses could confirm they hadn’t even raised their voices, let alone done anything physical, they weren’t in trouble - so almost an hour later Ol’ Crazy Eyes was in the back of a police cruiser with a rack of pending charges from drunk and disorderly to **** to felony stalking. Beth was expecting a call from a detective the next morning and was safe in the word of the cops that her roommate wouldn’t be getting out of lockup for at least a couple of days and she would have time to file for an order of protection before bail could be paid and processed.
You and Sabrina, at this point, were floored.
“It keeps going,” Eric sighed.
He offered to take Beth home, but she insisted that they really did need to talk, and not wanting to deal with any more bars they ended up walking to a Wendy’s a couple of blocks over. Once they were sitting with their food, Beth got nervous all over again and asked Eric to go first, and he was so worn out from everything that he, allegedly, just blurted out that he was an idiot for trying to say he wanted casual because he thought she was amazing, and he didn’t want to plan for them to be short-term if she was willing to try for longer than his last week in the city. Then he admitted that everything that had happened that night could be a massive issue but he hoped it wouldn’t.
“And that’s when she said - and this is a direct quote because it’s seared into my fucking brain - ‘Well, honestly Eric, I really like you too, but you should probably hold onto that thought for a second for after I tell you my thing. You know Joy, my friend we had the threesome with? Well apparently she had crabs, and now I’ve got them, which probably means you do too. I am so sorry.”
You and Sabrina were silent for a long moment as Eric stared off into space, across the conference room at the far wall.
Clearing your throat as your mind caught up to reality, you couldn’t help yourself as they both looked at you. “At least it wasn’t, like, gonorrhoea or syphilis or something, right?”
Sabrina managed not to snort, shooting you a glare with a laugh in her eyes. “Not helping, John,” she said.
“Sorry,” you apologised to Eric. “That sucks, man. Especially that you got it from Joy of all people.”
“Yeah, well, fuck me, right?” Eric sighed.
“So what happened next?” Sabrina asked. “Please tell me you didn’t just dump her after all of that because she has the same thing as you do.”
“We finished eating,” Eric said. “Pretty much in silence. Then I walked her home since it was walking distance. And she invited me up, since she really didn’t want to be alone, and we kind of just sat on the couch together for like an hour until I told her that what I said was still true, and she was like, ‘Really? After you find out me and everyone around me is pretty much a hot mess?’ and I was like ‘OK but have you met me?’ and so I guess we’re gonna try to keep it rolling?”
“Good for you,” Sabrina said. “I’m so proud of you for being mature about all of that, Eric.”
“That sounds great, man,” you said.
He sighed and nodded. “Now I just need to wait to hear about her filing the request for the restraining order,” he said. “And if she needs anything from me to help.”
You shook your head slowly, without words. Eric, even if he’d gotten crabs right at the end of the summer, was somehow coming out ahead in the maturity and relationship department.
Good for him.
