Chapter 7 by DRaBcommish DRaBcommish

What should she do next?

Enter the building cautiously

Zoe slipped through the open door, the heart pounding in the chest of the body she inhabited. The building was dimly lit, the air cool and slightly musty. She took a moment to let the eyes of the body she inhabited adjust to the darkness. The hallway stretched out before her, lined with closed doors and silent shadows. She needed to find a place to hide, to think, to figure out her next move.

As she moved deeper into the building, she heard faint noises--footsteps, murmurs, the creak of old wood. It was an apartment building, and she could sense the presence of others nearby. She reached the end of the hallway and found a staircase leading both up and down. She had to make a choice quickly.

Deciding that going further up would definitely lead her to encounter people, she opted to go down. The stairs led to the basement, where she hoped to find an unused storage room or a quiet corner to hide. The descent was steep and narrow, the walls closing in around her.

At the bottom of the stairs, she found a dimly lit corridor. It was colder down here, the air thick with dust. She moved quietly, listening for any signs of life. Most of the doors were locked, but she finally found one that was slightly ajar. She pushed it open and slipped inside.

The room was filled with old furniture, boxes, and discarded items. It looked like a storage area, rarely used. She found a corner behind a stack of boxes and settled down, wrapping the arms of the body around its knees. The body she inhabited shivered slightly in the cool air.

As she sat there, she heard footsteps approaching. Someone was coming down the stairs, their steps echoing in the silence. She held her breath--or rather, the breath of the body she was using--hoping they wouldn't find her. The footsteps stopped outside the door, and she heard the creak of the door being pushed open.

What should she do next?
