The preparation over the summer was surreal. Alongside the standard dorm shopping, Dana had to psychologically brace herself for the mandate. Every time she looked at the welcome packet, the reality of the "First-Year Uniform Code" mocked her. She spent weeks experimenting with her wardrobe, buying looser jeans, longer sweaters, and flowy skirts, trying to figure out how to best conceal the inevitable bulk. At times she wondered about trying to buy diapers in advance to get used to them, but she was too nervous.

Move-in day arrived in late August and Dana moved into college. Euryanthe was exactly as the brochure had promised. The campus was beautiful, and the RA who greeted her was very friendly. Abigail, she introduced herself as. As they walked up to Dana's room, their conversation was cordial and didn't touch on the diaper issue that was pressing. Dana unlocked her dorm room to meet her roommate, a girl named Sarah with anxious eyes, who greeted her with a shy "Hi, I'm Sarah Aramistery." As Dana introduces herself and they start to learn about each other, she eases up a bit, and Sarah seems to be doing the same.
