Enquire about the sculpture

Chapter 9 by Lantash

You tear your gaze away from the fountain with effort, though the sound of water still pulses at the edge of your awareness. "It's incredible," you say, gesturing toward the sculpture. "The detail—I've never seen marble look so... alive. Almost like he could breathe."

Andreas follows your gaze, his expression shifting to something between pride and exasperation. "Ah. You've discovered the spa’s crown jewel. We call him Triton—an homage to the sea-god, though I suspect the original myth didn't include quite so much... self-admiration." His lips quirk in a sardonic smile. "The guests certainly seem to appreciate the artistic license."

He steps closer to the fountain, running his fingers along the volcanic rock base without touching the gleaming marble. "He was created by Konstantinos, he's our local sculptor, works at the Heraklion Museum in town restoring ancient pieces. The man has an almost supernatural gift for stone. I've watched him work; he claims he doesn't carve statues so much as liberate them from the rock, like Michelangelo and his 'angel in the marble' nonsense."

Andreas's expression darkens slightly, though there's amusement in his voice. "The problem is he's *too* good. Triton here and the others scattered over the resort; they're uncanny. Lifelike doesn't begin to cover it. We've had guests..." He pauses, selecting his words with care. "We've had guests become so overwhelmed by the beauty of the pieces that they've... formed intimate attachments to them. Repeatedly."

He clears his throat, glancing at the water still pulsing across Triton's chest. “Triton here had a particularly…enamoured guest last summer. The guest broke into the Spa one night and …rode Triton repeatedly until the early hours of the morning, when I walked in on him. Konstantinos was furious when I told him and blamed me… as if I can police what people do to marble in the middle of the night."

Andreas shakes his head, though you catch the ghost of a smile. "Still, his work draws people here. There's something about the way he captures flesh in stone that borders on the magical. If you're truly interested in the sculptures, you might visit him at the museum. Though I'd advise against mentioning how you discovered his name—he's still rather angry with me about Triton’s defilement."
