Enlightening.

As they climbed into the car, Ryan asked Jane where she'd like to eat.

"Anywhere!" she said with a laugh. "You know I don't care!"

He started the car. "So if I were to ask you to choose between Italian and burgers?"

She shrugged. "I dunno. I guess Italian? I'm happy with either one, obviously."

As they drove, Ryan turned on a radio station. It was 90's alt-rock, and Jane immediately started bobbing her head.

"Oh my God, this is amazing!" She closed her eyes and started swaying slightly to the music. "God, this feels so fucking good." Her eyes shot open, wide with a revelation. "We should go dancing! Holy shit, let's go dancing!"

Ryan chuckled as he took a left turn. "Let's get dinner first. So do you normally like this kind of music?"

She leaned her seat back and put her sandal-clad feet on the dashboard. "Nope! Can't stand STP. Or I guess I couldn't stand them. Now I fucking love them!" She smirked. "I guess I'll never be a music critic. Or anything critic? I'm still wrapping my mind around this. I'm never gonna dislike a meal or the weather or a person or anything ever again! My next root canal's gonna be a blast, doing my taxes will be like going to a movie. Holy shit, I'm gonna have to tamp it down at funerals, huh?"

They pulled into the parking lot and Ryan cut the engine. As they were getting out of the car, he asked Jane a question.

"That's something I've been wondering about. Jane, do you think you could pretend to be normal?"

"What would be the point of that?" she asked, a goofy smile on her face.

"Well, it might be useful at times. Like I know nothing bothers you, but you wouldn't want to embarrass me, would you?" She shook her head vigorously. "Then why don't you try acting normal in the restaurant?"

She grinned and nodded. "You got it, man! I must be so much fun to be around right now. I just go along with anything you say." She giggled, then stopped herself.

"Right. Very serious. Very somber," she said with an expression of mock-seriousness. "Can't let anyone know how fucking awesome my life is. Gotta keep it under wraps."

"You're not doing a very good job so far," he said as he opened the door for her.

"Wow, that was insulting. My feelings are hurt because you insulted me," she said with a grin. "I'm upset with you now. How's that?"

He rolled his eyes and followed her in.
