Chapter 11
by SingingLark
Does Liandra remember about the dagger? Or should she continue to enjoy herself at the fair?
Enjoy
Liandra didn't remember ever having so much fun! She joined a large dance of faeries, elves and satyrs, and for her beauty and grace she didn't lack suitors to keep her entertained. One more handsome then the other, with either the delicate features of the elves, or the primal manliness of the satyr. Internally the princess confessed she preferred the later, but she didn't deny anyone.
"Do you want to kiss me?" sometimes one of them would ask, and not once Liandra could have said no. The very concept seemed alien to her, the price she paid for her silver tiara. These were very chaste kisses. She just kissed their cheeks, but that didn't stop her from thinking 'I am such a trollop'.
The night grew long, but Liandra didn't tire. She loved every minute of it. She flirted with various creatures, always hovering just beyond their grasp, and not refusing a single request they did. She found herself showered with their gifts, small things like a spoon she would never lose, or a cup that will never be filled. She didn't have a use for most of these treasures, so she readily exchanged them for snacks and beverages whenever she had a chance.
The sky began to brighten, and Liandra knew dawn was approaching and the market participants began to leave. She wondered how she would get home, and remembered her dagger. She unsheathed it and, true to the stranger's word, the dagger pointed to the way home. It also caused quite a commotion.
"Donavar's dagger! Donavar's dagger!" One cried, and Liandra was horrified to see a space open all around her, it was as if she had the plague or something. She saw two huge trolls beginning to head her way, and knew she was going to be in trouble!
She wasn't wrong. There was an on the spot trial.
"How did a human get such a treasure?"
The centaur that was questioning her was terrifying. Liandra didn't have the option to lie to him.
"A stranger gave it to me. As a gift" She was asked to describe this stranger, but she was very vague. "That must be Donavar ! Donavar is here!" one of them said, but another countered "No one saw him all night long" this caused quite a stir, but the centaur drew her attention back to her. "Listen to me carefully, girl. When did he give you this dagger?" Liandra related faithfully the tale, not missing a single detail. "There are no gifts nor loans today, Princess Liandra of Luxius" When did she tell him who she was? "If you cant pay him before the night is over, then you will be turned into a goblin and work for the market until the debt is true."
"That wont be necessary, Orion" the stranger stepped from the crowd, and when he took off the cloak Liandra could see how handsome this stranger truly was! Sandy hair, angular face, tall and thin, he was as a prince stepped out of Faerie tales. "I am here, and ready to take my prize. Princess, would you accept me as your vassal? My name is Donavar of the many roads, Donavar the rake." Liandra was about to say yes, but the centaur interrupted "The queen of faeries already has your allegiance, you villain. You can no more accept this payment than this girl could give you. You know the rules, only the things which she traded freely can be demanded as payment."
This Donavar didnt appear at all concerned, perhaps his offer truly was in jest. "And what did she trade?"
"She traded of her body" Liandra remembered giving her hair "...she traded of her mind..." what was the word that she lost? Liandra didn't remember "... and she traded her affections"
"She had authorization from the Whore's Guild?" Donavar asked incredulous "No, but they didn't bring charges. But regardless, choose your price, and if the princess doesn't refuse you it shall be yours"
"I am hardly that cruel, Orion. Liandra, my darling. This must all be very strange and alien to you, but we aren't without compassion. So why don't you choose in which way you are going to pay me? Just keep in mind my gift is a far greater treasure than any of these baubles you purchased."
So how should the princess repay him?
