Chapter 27 by BlackMonosh

What's next?

Ending - Kurenai

The hospital corridor was clinical and cold, a stark contrast to the stifling tension hanging in the air. For hours, the sound of Kurenai’s labored, rhythmic screams had echoed through the ward—a raw, visceral sound that made even the most hardened Jonin shift uncomfortably. You stood leaning against the far wall, your arms crossed tightly over your chest, your heart hammering a rhythm that matched the ticking of the wall clock.

Then, the screaming stopped.

The ensuing silence was deafening. It stretched for one minute, then five, then eight. In the absence of sound, the air seemed to thicken. Every second felt like an eternity, the silence more terrifying than the pain that had preceded it. You looked at the closed door of the delivery room, your breath held in your lungs until it burned.

Kakashi stood a few feet away, his lone visible eye fixed on the floor, while Guy remained unusually quiet, his hands clasped behind his back. Team 8, Shino and Kiba, were there too, pacing the small tiles of the waiting area. They were all there for her, the woman who had somehow found her way back from the brink of despair, only to shock the village by revealing a pregnancy with no named father.

Suddenly, the door swung open. Tsunade stepped out, looking exhausted but smiling. "The mother is resting. You may come in, but please, keep your voices down."

As the group filed into the room, the atmosphere shifted from anxiety to profound curiosity. Kurenai lay propped up against the pillows, her raven hair damp with sweat and clinging to her pale forehead. She looked drained, but there was a serene, triumphant glow about her that none of them had seen since before the war. In her arms, wrapped in a soft white bundle, was the reason for the silence.

Kiba was the first to lean in, Akamaru whining low at his heels. "Whoa... look at that hair."

The room went quiet as everyone took a good look at the newborn. The baby was healthy and loud-lunged, but it was the appearance that gave everyone pause. The infant had a shock of hair that wasn't quite the Sarutobi brown or the Yuhi black. It was a peculiar shade, catching the hospital light in a way that felt strangely familiar to everyone in the room. Moreover, the eyes, though currently squinted shut, seemed to hold a shape and structure that made Shino adjust his glasses in deep thought.

"Kurenai-sensei," Sakura whispered, looking between the baby and her former teacher. "He's... he's beautiful. But we still don't know... I mean, who...?"

Kurenai didn't say a word. She didn't look at Kakashi's questioning gaze or Kiba's confused expression. Her eyes remained fixed on the bundle in her arms, a private, knowing smile touching her lips. She had kept her word, refusing to breathe a word of the father’s identity to the village or the council.

You stepped forward, the floorboards creaking under your boots. The others instinctively parted way for you, the hero of the village. You reached the side of the bed, your blue eyes meeting Kurenai’s crimson ones. There was an unspoken language passing between you, a memory of a mountain top, a kitchen table, and months of secret, heated nights.

"Can I?" you asked, your voice surprisingly steady.

Kurenai nodded, her smile widening just a fraction as she carefully transferred the warm, heavy weight into your arms. As you held the child, the baby’s eyes fluttered open for the first time. They weren't crimson, nor were they blue; they were a startling, deep violet, a perfect blend of the two of you.

"He looks like a fighter, like his father," you murmured, tracing the baby's tiny, grasping hand with your thumb. You looked at the assembled shinobi, who were all watching you with growing suspicion and dawning realization. You didn't care.

"Since you’re being so quiet about everything," you said, looking back at Kurenai, "I might as well be the one to name him. It’s the least I can do for my favorite host."

Kurenai let out a soft, melodic laugh, the sound of a woman who was finally, truly free. "Go ahead, Naruto. Give him a name he can carry with pride."

You looked down at the boy, feeling the surge of protectiveness that had been building since that first morning in her apartment. "Shinji," you declared, your voice ringing out clearly in the quiet room. "His name is Shinji Uzumaki-Yuhi."

The collective gasp from the room was audible. Kiba’s jaw dropped, and Kakashi’s eyebrow climbed toward his hairline. The truth was out, not through a confession, but through a claim.

Kurenai leaned her head back against the pillow, watching you hold your son. She knew the village would talk, that the scandal would be the talk of the tea houses for months, but as she watched you beam down at the baby, she knew she had made the right choice. "Shinji," she repeated, testing the name. "I like it. It sounds strong."

You leaned down, pressing a lingering kiss to her forehead, ignoring the shocked whispers of your friends behind you. "He'll be the strongest. Just like his mother."

As the doctors moved in to perform final checks, you reluctantly handed the baby back. You turned to leave, knowing you had missions to attend to and a village to protect, but you stopped at the door, looking back at the woman who had changed your life in the most unexpected way.

Kurenai caught your eye and mouthed two words, a playful, wicked glint returning to her eyes despite the exhaustion of labor. “Life long customer.”

You grinned, a true Uzumaki smile that lit up your whole face. "You too, Kurenai. I'll be back tonight. Don't think you're getting out of our next date just because of a little thing like childbirth."
