You arrive at a polished wooden door. "This is me," she says softly, her back against the door. She doesn't let go of your hand. "So, our alliance starts tonight," she states, a statement of fact. "Tomorrow, the challenges begin. We watch, we learn. I might add new guy to my army."

"Got it," you say, squeezing her hand. "Watch and learn. Be boring."

A genuine, brilliant smile lights up her face. "No one's ever going to accuse you of being boring again," she says. She leans in, not for another kiss, but to press her cheek against yours. Her breath is warm against your ear. "Sweet dreams, General." Then, with a final, intense look that feels like both a promise and a command, she disappears into her room, closing the door softly behind her.

You stand alone in the hushed hallway for a moment, the ghost of her touch still on your skin. The night didn't end with the explosive train ride Mia wanted, or the political merger Matt and Adriana are plotting. It ended here. Quietly. Strategically. A foundation has been laid.
