Emily waits until she can make him pay

Emily decided to wait. What good was it to just confront her lying, piece of shit husband if all she could get in return was empty apologies? She needed to make a plan and that would take time. For now, she had chores to do.

James returned home that evening in a bad mood from being late to work and forgetting his work phone at home. Emily watched his face as he unlocked it to read his messages. She saw his eyes widen slightly at what she assumed was him reading Hannah's dirty texts she sent him earlier. What she didn't see was him noticing that the messages had already been read before he got to them. At least that avoided her having to jumpstart the plan she was formulating all day.

"How's the chicken, honey?" Emily asked James as he scrolled through his messages.

He put the phone, screen down, onto the table. "Wonderful baby! You really are the best cook," he said with a smile. Emily smiled in return and they ate in silence while they both looked at their phones.

Later that night, as Emily laid in bed wearing her pink nightgown while James brushed his teeth, she asked, "Is Brian still dating that lawyer?"

Brian and James came up together as junior level associates and were close friends until they later moved into managerial positions. The company pitted their teams against one another and that was the end of their friendship. Emily knew Brian as "fucking Brian" according to James. What James didn't know is that Brian asked Emily out early into her relationship with James. She heard rumors about how he was a player throughout the company. This was besides the fact that she and James had already started sleeping together. She politely turned down his proposal and he never asked her out again.

James spit toothpaste out of his mouth and said, "Probably. Why? Are you trying to hook him up with one of your friends from your pilates class?"

Emily scrolled to Brian's phone number in her contact list and wondered if he had kept the same number from when they first met.

"Yeah. Amy might like him," she said while clicking on the phone number.

"Does Amy want a one-night stand from a guy who will ghost her a week later?" James asked wiping his mouth with a hand towel.

Emily clicked Brian's number and sent him a text message:

"Is this Brian Kaplan?"

She watched three dots that let her know her message had been received and they were typing a response.

"Well Amy's not looking for anything serious," Emily said to James. She received a text back saying:

"Yes? Who's this?"

She briefly paused before making a decision.
