Chapter 25 by Nero24
You go to sleep, finally, but…
Elsewhere, it isn’t as peaceful.
Back in the city, a man in a hat and an old, tattered suit is humming to himself and kicking away cavie corpses. Giant footsteps of a long gone T-Rex are embedded in the ground, which he happily skips over.
“Bloody mess,” he grins.
“They’re long gone,” calls out the voice of the woman behind him, crouched on the ground.
“O’Course they are,” the man chuckles. “He’s not stupid.”
The man with the gun stands atop an abandoned bandit car and sighs. “Then we’re at a fucking loss. Boss, reckon it’s time to–?”
“Shh!” the behatted man says sharply, raising a finger and tilting his head. The other two heard nothing, but readied themselves anyway. After a moment they heard the growl, the roar of a strong engine, and soon a dark red car swerved around the corner, heading towards them and screeching to a stop.
The man grinned as three bandits left the car and stood behind it, taking aim.
“What the fuck?” the lead bandit said, looking down at the dead bandit by the behatted man’s feet. “That’s fucking Davis. They killed Davis!!!”
“Would you believe me if I said we found him like this?” the man smiled.
“Motherfucker,” the bandit growled, cocking his gun. Behind the man, his female companion on the ground and his man atop the car both took aim with their rifles, but the behatted man stood perfectly confident, arms spread lazily to his sides and hands open.
“Come now,” he smiled. “Surely there’s a better way to deal with this than getting ourselves all killed?”
“Stay ready,” the lead said, a gun trained on each of their opponents.
“Tsk-tsk,” the behatted man said. “I’m unarmed, you know.”
“Fi–!” the bandit began to say, as the behatted man lunged forward with incredible speed.
All three bandits aimed at him in a panic and it that moment the behatted man’s allies fired, shooting the side-placed bandits in the head. The middle one fired at the behatted man, who twisted impossibly out of the way and swung around, nails slashing the bandit’s face open.
The bandit screamed and the behatted man grabbed the rifle off of him, jabbing an open palm into his throat and tearing it out liquidly. He fell to the ground, gasping and **** on his blood as the suited man stood over him with a smile, and brought the stock of the rifle sharply down on his head once.
“Close one, boss,” the man on the car complained.
“Ah, you two need to learn to have a little more fun,” the behatted man grinned, scratching the blood splattered on his face tattoo.
“Point is, we’ve lost him,” the woman says. “His scent’s not easy to pick up.”
Their leader threw his head back and drew a long, deep, sharp breath in through his nose. Gunpowder. Pollen. Sweat. Blood. And the unmistakable scent of a woman, mixed in with smoke and fuel, trailing downwards… and out of the city.”
“Ohh, he’s still around,” the behatted man grins, walking off as he adjusts the bowler hat on his head. “And he isn’t alone. We’ll find him yet.”
The man jumps off the car and the woman straightens up as they both follow him. “We can get the others, if you’re sure,” the man says.
“Oh, I’m sure,” the behatted man grins. “Make sure you get everyone.”
The man grins and runs on ahead as the woman keeps pace with her leader. “So we’re on the right trail?”
“You two need to have more faith,” the behatted man smiles. “He was obviously **** enough to use a vehicle… sloppy, I thought, but it seems he’s traveling with a woman. Silly, too bloody silly.”
“What if we lose the trail again?” the woman asks worriedly.
The man puts both hands in his suit pockets and walks happily, grinning up at the sky. “Just remember not to be stupid. Ser listo, sweetheart.”
Back on the roof, your eyes finally open.
