Chapter 3 by vertigo vertigo

Wielder, power variant, and motive?

Elizabeth Briar/Modern day witch/Abusing her power to earn money

Variant:

Universal Carrier with Latent Messaging, Crude Conditioning, and some **Visual Delivery**

Wielder

Name: Elizabeth Briar

Personal: Elizabeth is a college student in her early 20s. She is studying linguistics and trying to earn extra money by selling charms to her gullible classmates. Despite learning magick from both her mother and grandmother respectively, Liz was never much of a believer. Still, the practice of witchcraft was a family tradition and it helped to give Elizabeth something to focus on after her father passed away.

Motive: At the start, witchcraft is simply a fun tradition Elizabeth keeps up for her enjoyment and to maintain family ties. Things start to change when money troubles hit and a religious student starts harassing her. Slowly, her magick morphs into a tool of control and **** as she starts to realise just how much power words and symbols truly have.

Limitations: This section is to further explain what Elizabeth's magick can and can't do that the previous section for subliminal messaging might not cover. To keep things simple, I'm using the witch from the TTRPG monsterhearts 2 as a guide. This means that in order to cast a spell you need to follow these rules.

  1. Elizabeth must be able to see her target if she is casting a "cold" spell. (cold means no preparation or tools on hand to help with the spell.)
  2. Chanting empowers the spell, the louder and more emotional, the better. Quiet spells can work but are not as effective. Intensity is key; you are trying to mentally impose your will on another after all.
  3. If Elizabeth cannot see her target, she must have a token or something that belongs to the target. Something with a deep personal connection works best. Elizabeth can also give the target something of hers instead but this is not as effective. In either case the target does not need to be aware they or Elizabeth have these tokens. (This is the bare minimum to set up a basic ritual.)
  4. The more complex the spell, the more likely it will fail. Magick takes a lot of energy and nothing earths/grounds that energy faster than an overly complicated command with multiple layers and moving parts. Remember K.I.S.S (Keep it simple, stupid!)
  5. Finally, magick is not free or without risk. Contrary to popular belief, magic does not break the laws of energy conservation. Elizabeth will only ever get out what she puts into a spell and sometimes she won't even get that; also, fucking around with someone else's perception of reality is no joking matter. A lot can go wrong. e.g If she's not careful, a small emotional hang up can be transformed into a crippling personal demon.

What's next?

More fun
