Chapter 20
by carnivorous cow
What does Druuna do?
Druuna pays for her room.
Druuna shook her head and replied “No thank you sir, I’ll pay for my own room.”
The scarred man scowled at her and placed a large hand on her shoulder “Why? What’s wrong with me? You too uppity to share a room with me? Is that it? You bitch.” the large man squeezed Druuna’s shoulder painfully, making her yelp.
The innkeeper whipped out a pistol and pointed it at the man “Now stop that! That kind of shit is illegal in this city and I wont be having it in MY inn. Leave her alone or I’ll have the bouncer throw you over docks!”
The surly man sneered and let go of Druuna “Fine. Whatever. I’m getting tired of this place anyways.” then he whispered to Druuna “I’ll get you bitch. Not now, but later. I’ll get you.” and left the bar.
The innkeeper watched the man go, and only lowered his gun when he was out of sight. He turned to Druuna; who was still a little shaken up, and said “Sorry about that missy. We get assholes like that coming in sometimes, what with all the pirates and sailors just getting off of a long tour in a cramped boat. You still interested in that room? I’ll give you a discount for your troubles, only ten caps.”
Druuna nodded and gave the innkeeper the ten bottle caps “Sure, that’d be great, thank you.”
The innkeeper gave Druuna a bronze key with a number eight on it “Here you go, room number eight. Just go up the stairs and you should be able to find it easy enough. Would you like some stew for dinner? On the house with the room.”
Druuna stared at the innkeeper for awhile and said “Oh, oh no. No stew thank you.”
The innkeeper looked at Druuna and shrugged “You sure? A warm meal isn’t something most people pass up.”
Drunna shook her head “No thanks. I’ve had some…bad experiences with stew. Thanks for the room.”
The innkeeper nodded and told her “You’re welcome. Each room has a tub and well connection. It’s a simple pump well, jerk the handle a few times to get the water to come out, fill a bucket with water and dump it in the tub. Do that a few times and you should have a tub of clean water for bathing.”
Druuna again thanked the innkeeper and went up the stairs to her room.
The room was a modest bedroom and bathroom with mud brick walls. Adobe walls like these were quite common in many areas, as it was quite hard to make large quantities of concrete anymore. Druuna noticed with glee that the bed had an actual spring mattress, instead of the hay stuffed beds people slept in in the poorer regions. The bathroom was merely a couple of buckets, a wooden tub, a towel and washcloth and a pump on the wall that connected to a well deep below the earth. Druuna spent the next half hour filling buckets with cold water and dumping it into the large tub, slowly filling the bath to fullness.
When the bath was filled to the brim, Druuna kicked off her shoes into the corner and began undressing. She slid her hoses off, unbuttoned her cheap pair of shorts, pulled off her belt and stripped her shirt off. The bath water was freezing cold, but Druuna was too happy to finally be able to get clean to notice. After cleaning herself off and washing the dirt and sweat out of her hair, Druuna climbed onto her bed and counted her money. A depressingly small total of twenty-six bottle caps was all she found in her pockets. Enough to maybe buy a cheap meal at a local restaurant, but that was about it. Druuna shrugged and said to herself “Oh well. That one guard mentioned a Finders Guild. I bet I could get employment there.”
Druuna got up from the bed and pumped a bit of water into her canteen. Then she grabbed her clothing and dropped everything on the bed. Carefully, Druuna peeled the gauze covering her injured thigh and applied clean water to the wound. Then she took a roll of gauze out of her belt and bandaged up her wound with fresh gauze. Druuna decided that the wound looked much better, and would probably heal without any noticeable scarring or bruising.
With her thigh taken care of and her body feeling clean for the first time in days, Druuna put on her shorts and shirt and curled up in her bed. The sun had nearly crested the horizon, and the moon found Druuna already fast asleep.
What does morning bring?
