Chapter 21
by carnivorous cow
What does morning bring?
Druuna heads for the Finders Guild, but can she remember where it is?
Druuna slept well that night, and woke up late in the morning, feeling rested and optimistic for the first time since nearly being captured along the coast a few days earlier. Druuna gathered her supplies, refilled her canteen from the well and dressed before locking the room up and giving the key back to the innkeeper. He smiled as he saw her approach the bar and asked “Did you rest well?”
Druuna nodded and replied happily “Yes I did, thank you. The bed was quite comfortable.”
The innkeeper handed Druuna a warm bowl of porridge and siad “Glad to here it! I take pride in making sure my beds are clean and soft for paying customers. Here, eat up. Breakfast is on the house since you didn’t have dinner last night.”
Druuna replied “Thank you very much sir. Say, can you tell me how to get to the Finders Guildhall?”
The innkeeper nodded and replied “Sure, sure. Follow the walkway going north outside the door until you come to a sign that says “Oak street”, go west up Oak street until you see a sign that says “Ironwood street”. Go north on Ironwood until you see a big three story building with a sign that says “Finders Guild”; that is of course the Finders Guild. The grandmaster or junior grandmaster of the guildhall should be there. They can help get you started.”
Druuna thanked the innkeeper and finished her breakfast before going out the door and into the sunny morning. The docks were quieter in the morn, and most of the sailors were either indoors nursing hangovers or already out at sea. Replacing them were kindly old fishermen sitting on plastic and wood chairs, waiting for a fish that they really didn’t care if they caught. Druuna whistled quietly to herself as the smell of the sea air and the cries of seagulls wafted over her.
Eventually the wooden walkway brought her to a faded green sign indicating Oak street. She turned west to follow it and enjoyed the feel of cobblestones under her shoes. As she enjoyed the morning air, Druuna thought about what had brought her here.
Druuna had always been interested in things from the lost times, and a whole guild of people with interests like hers was more than she could have hoped for. While some of the simpler devices of the lost times still remained; such as guns and flashlights, the bulk of the lost worlds wonders were ignored as being useless. Guns would likely be abandoned some day as well, as the bullets made in the lost times were used up. Some said that the lost times were caused by the sins of technology, that to investicate such things was to invite another disaster. But Druuna had seen things that made her think otherwise.
Once, when she was a young child, Druuna had stumbled into a hole she found in the side of a hill while out playing with the other children. At first she was frightened, thinking she was lost in some sort of cave. But then she heard something. Walking with trepidation towards what she thought were voices, Druuna came to a great hall that dwarfed any temple she had been to in her whole eight years of life. And in the font of the hall was an amazing sight. Upon a gigantic piece of pure white fabric, a lady danced. Druuna could only stare in fear and curiosity as before her eyes, a two dimensional woman in a sparkling dress elegantly danced. She stood there for a time that seemed to her both short and long. Time seemed to lose substance as she stared at that dancing figure, whose sad eyes seemed to weep for a lost generation. Eventually Druuna heard the adults out calling here name and she realized that she had to leave.
Those hills flooded that Spring, and Druuna never found that magical great hall again. But she dreamed of it often, and her mind seemed to always wander to it. Who was that elegant lady, whose eyes seemed so sad while her dance seemed so happy? Druuna didn’t know, but she really wanted to.
Druuna walked down the city streets, taking in the sights and sounds of the slowly wakening settlement. She lost her track of thought and finally noticed that she had walked quite far in her reminiscing. She noticed two signs nearby, one that said Ironside Street and another that said Ironwood Street.
Which street was Druuna supposed to take again? She can't quite remember...
