Chapter 5 by solidrabbit1 solidrabbit1

What's next?

Drop off your luggage and run to the engine core

The shuttle docked on the Massachusetts are you made a beeline for your quarters. You hoped that Dr. Lo would wonder around the ship and let out whatever steam she had in herself getting lost on the ship. There was a couple hours of free time before the crew should be all accounted for and we leave the docking bay.

Deck 8, the home of most of the highest ranked officers on the ship. There were a few exceptions here and there. The captain's quarters, for example, were on a "secret" deck only accessible by the captain. In actuality, Captain Miller's quarters are in a special section of deck 7. The turbolift is programmed to only drop the captain off at that specific section and it isn't accessible by any other means. Obviously, some exceptions can be made.

The door to your room opened and your threw your luggage inside. It sailed through the air and landed up against the wall. You'll have time to unpack later. You want to go to the ship's engine to see if Dr. Lo was there furiously examining your modifications.

You stepped into the turbolift and instructed it to take you to the engine core. The doors closed and the lift started to zoom straight to your destination. You traveled for no longer than a minute before you arrived at the destination. The beauties of modern technology.

The doors opened and you could see Dr. Lo typing away at a console with one of your engineers cowering beside her. Even though your trip to your quarters was as brief as you could make it, this man must have taken a verbal beating from the doctor. He was hunched over and crossing his arms like he wanted to hide himself from her.

"Good morning, boss!" said the man. By calling you Boss instead of your official rank and name, he successfully threw you under the bus and made you the target of Dr. Lo's questioning.

"You're the one in charge here?" Dr. Lo asked as the engineer subtly left the area.

"Yes, I am. You must be the great Dr. Lo I've read about so much." You reply. Hopefully sucking up to her will quell her rage.

"This design of yours is completely asinine and won't survive more than two light-years." So much for a productive conversation...

"My design works flawlessly and it passed numerous simulations just to get it approved by Astrofleet."

"My design is actually tested, unlike yours. The phase crystals are in 0.36% less stable alignment than my design."

"Yes, but the fuel consumption is 0.24% less and we have a 1.27% higher top warp speed. The phase crystals would stay aligned for more than three years with no maintenance anyway."

"Mine can go for six years without maintenance."

"What Astroship goes without maintenance for six years?"

"Yours when the crew is **** to abandon ship because of your faulty designs."

The conversation stayed this intense while you and Dr. Lo examined every last component of engineering. You had to defend every last design decision made on everything. Even the ones that neither of you had any input on when they were install on the Massachusetts. Your specialty was in ship engines, not the logistics of having the antimatter flow panel next to the temperature control panel. At least it gave you the chance to see if everything was calibrated correctly.

How does this end?
