Chapter 10

Do not stare into the sun, lest it stare back.
Dragonfire
'This is really happening! I mean, I know it was the whole reason I came here, but it feels so different to actually walk on campus. My first day of college!' Your mind is racing with excitement that you lose track of the world around you. With a pep in your step you haven't had since the amusment park field trip in elementary school, you practically skip your way to your first class.
While the whole thing is nothing special, just classes as you would expect, you feel like you are walking on air. Admittedly, academics was not your forte, but it served as a great distraction back in the day. Now you can actually work towards becoming a teacher. Like a sponge, you did everything you could to soak in as much as your brain could handle.
There was just one problem. You couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching you. No matter how hard you tried to concentrate, little things got in the way. The laptop Ayame gave you crashed. The pencil you tried to take backup notes with snapped then fell to who knows where when you were sharpening it. Then your notebook disappeared when you weren't looking. You were fighting a panic attack the whole time. If it wasn't for today being introductions, you might have lost it.
At least Ms. Rivera was kind and gave you a spare set of notes she had. Maybe it was all the training Nariko is putting you through, but you caught your eyes wandering to the voluptuous dragon's cleavage more than once while explaining what happened. At least she didn't say anything about it, you were embarassed and frustrated enough as is.
The way classes were structured was weird here. The teachers came to the classes while the students stayed in the same room for the mandatory studies. It will take some getting used to, but it wasn't to different. The day was going pretty well so far, despite the problems in Ms. Rivera's class.
At lunch hour, Lucille came up to you just as you had gotten out of class. "Someone's waiting for you on the roof." Red flags everywhere were waving in your face. Then again, she seemed to be on friendly terms with Brian and you feel you can trust his taste in friends. "Be careful and things should be fine." You made a mental note to reconsider that feeling.
You flinch as a foot slams against the wall next to your head. When you got to the roof you were immediately pushed backwards against the entrance. A very pissed looking draconic beauty waiting for you. Deja vu.
"Just who in the nine hells do you think you are?!" She shouts loud enough to give you a headache.
The feeling of some previously bottled up emotions rising within you causes you to clench your fist. 'No.' You take a deep breath and calm yourself for a second. "What do you mean?"
She stomps the wall again, a little closer this time. "Like you don't fucking know! Explain yourself already!"
'For the love of-' Another breath. No. No more of this. You have had enough. There must be a better way to handle this. "Listen, I have barely lived here for a week. I have never met you before nor have I heard of you. There is no reasonable way I would know what you are talking about." Just keep calm. You can do this. Just keep calm. "Instead of making me guess, we can both figure out what is going on faster if you just tell me."
She grits her teeth, but removes her foot from the wall. "What do you think you're doing hanging out with Nariko?"
Ok, of all things this could have been, that was not what you were expecting. Maybe you should have though? Still, better be honest here. "She was showing me around town."
There is a complicated expression on the dragon's face, maybe it is the lack of social skills, but you have no idea what it means. For a split second your eyes dart to her exposed cleavage and back. There is no way she didn't notice that.
After what feels like an eternity of her boring a hole through your skull with her stare, she lets out a sigh. "Fine, let's say that I believe you for now. Why you?"
Should you actually tell her this? You get a feeling lying is going to end very badly. "Her mom is paying for my scholarship here."
This earns you another squinty gaze from her. It is much shorter this time as she soon walks past you. A part of you wants to figure out what this was about. Alas you feel like your social batteries are completely tapped out. A bit of pride fills you for how you handled the situation. "I better go eat while I still can."
Boring aspects of school can be welcoming.
