Jessica sat next to the monitor, finding her eyes once again glued to the oscilloscope tracing Samantha and James's signals as they performed their intercat dance. In her mind, she imagined an epic battle between the forces of nature, each vying for dominance over a single space. Each time Sam's consciousness resurfaced, it was almost immediately drowned out by a perfectly mirror opposite wave generated by James's interference patterns. The level of precision required to match the exact frequency of Sam's resistance wave seemed impossible, yet somehow, James managed to accomplish it flawlessly. Almost as if predicting Sam's next attempt and neutralizing it before it could even occur. Dragging her back down to the oblivion of sleep. To the darkness of a dreamless slumber. While her body continued to move under the direction of another's will. That level of control was something that sent shivers down Jessica's spine. She looked up from the monitor at James looking for any signs of struggle for control but she saw none. All she saw was a normal scene. A young beautiful woman, lying on her back on an exam table, connected to several wires and sensors.
"What are you looking at me like that for Doc?" James asked, breaking the silence.
"Oh sorry, " Jessica said, snapping out of her daze. "It's just incredible how smoothly you're brain wave counter Samantha's. Like a perfect mirror image. It's like watching a ballet. Or a dance."
"Oh ummm, thanks Doc. I guess if bodyhopping was a sport, I'd be like a pro athlete or something." James joked, his voice echoing through Samantha's body.
"And you really don't feel Samantha's consciousness trying to push back?" Jessica asked, her voice filled with curiosity.
"No, Doc. Nothing but me in here." James shrugged.
"Fastinating." Jessica murmured, staring at the flickering peaks and valleys. "Well, Samantha is in there somewhere. I guess now is as good as ever to try and bring her back."
Jessica picked up the IV containing the **** cocktail she'd cooked up on her own. Yes, lying to Samantha and James was a bit sketchy but she needed to test this theory. No one would blame her if everything worked out.
She'd decided to call her concoction Neurotransmission Enhancer, or NE. Simple enough but it got the idea across. The **** was a series of chemicals designed to stimulate specific parts of the brain. Parts that controlled memory recall and the ability to manipulate certain brain functions. Like stimulating the area of the brain most active when waking up. She also added a chemical that targets the area of the brain responsible for smell. The logic behind this was simple. Smell triggers the strongest memories and if anything could trigger Sam to regain conciousness over her bodyhopper, it might be a scent. Something from her past, something that Sam cherished. Jessica was betting on this being the key to unlocking Sam's mind. She planned on spraying a bit of Sam's favorite perfume after administering the ****. But there could be consequences with this gamble. What would happen to James if Sam did break his hold on her? Would he be trapped inside her body? Would he lose contro? Would he get ejected violently, leaving him confused and frantic? Or would he be able to recover, reestablish control? Jessica had grown to like James over the years and she didn't want to hurt him in any way. She was confident in her abilities as a professional but there was always a chance things would go awry. Things could go horribly wrong. But years of research with no results had left Jessica feeling ****. Dr.Jessica Yuri contemplated all of this as she walked up to Samantha's body at the table.
As she approached she looked deeply into Samantha's face. Her beautiful face looking completely normal. Hiding the bodyhopper just beneath the surface. Then, as she looked over toward a blank monitor she could see Samantha's reflection through its darkened surface. Only it was James' face on Samantha's body in the reflection. This had always been one of the most unsettling aspects of bodyhopping for Jessica. The way it just altered someone's physical appearance was uncanny. She'd never get used to the site.
"Okay James, lets get your arm ready." Jessica said repressing her nerves. James just nodded with a almost heatbreakingly nervous look on Sam's face.
The doctor prepared the injection site with antiseptic wipes, ensuring the area was clean and sterile. She then carefully inserted the needle into Samantha's arm, taking care to avoid nerve endings and sensitive areas. She hung the IV from the support and the clear liquid disappeared into Samantha's veins, dispersing rapidly throughout her body.
A feeling of warmth washed over James as he basked in the sensation of Samantha's body reacting to the infusion of the ****. But then a slight lightheadedness crept through the corners of his consciousness, causing his vision to blur slightly.
"Woah, Doc. I'm feeling a little bit off. Is it supposed to be like this?" James asked, his voice echoing through Samantha's body.
"Don't worry, James. These feelings are temporary side effects of the ****. It should settle down shortly." Jessica reassured him, her voice firm and confident. "Just sit tight and focus on staying grounded. Remember, we're doing this together." Jessica said as she looked over at the brain wave monitors.
She could have sworn she saw what looked like a larger twitch in the targeted brain wave. Like Samantha was signaling to her to keep going. Jessica found herself smiling internally. "Good girl, Samantha. Let's see if we can break the barrior" Jessica thought as she pulled out a small perfume bottle from her lab coat.
