Chapter 36 by TheSpectator TheSpectator

What do you do?

Don't help

Well, if she really needed help she really would have asked you - or made some kind of attempt to actually get your attention. You tilt your head somewhat, knitting your brows together as you take your first step up the stairs. Even though you second guess yourself at first, when you make it to the top of the stairs, all you can think of is getting settling back into your room. You've taken a considerable amount of time off of "work" since you first started to hang out with Delilah more accordingly. It was time to get back into contracts; actual contracts, not simple gestures to help others.

You unlock the door to your room and sit down on your desk. You wipe off a layer of dust from your notes and then reach for the lantern on the table to turn it on. A rush of gas hisses then quietly roars to life as a flame appears - providing light and much needed warmth - it was much cooler in there than you were used to. The stack of contracts you had yet to complete was now thin. You knew that they didn't have to be done all that soon since they weren't rushed requests. Now that the weather is showing signs of an early winter, you think that it'd be best to get those worked out now, just so you don't have any loose ends going into the near year.

Most of the letters were kept safe, but when you pull from the stack, you do notice that you've abused the top row, using them as coasters. You also spot a few stains from previous jams and oils, but it doesn't seem to have any negative effects on the ink used for this contracts.

Contract #1:

Bounty Hunter needed! As owners for a rest stop, we tend to be a little ways away from the larger towns or cities. We're a pit stop! Unfortunately, this leaves us as open targets to some of the less-friendly folk in these parts. So far, we've had the luxury of not being the sole focus to some of the more aggressive bandits and marauder groups in the area. Even now, as I write this contract, I still don't believe I am in threat of personal harm, but I also believe I am in danger of being picked at! For further details, please find me on the road before Sage Lodge.

Contract #2:

Helped wanted! Dangerous, destructive, FIERCE animal on the loose. Livestock and human lives lost. Most active during the night; team of two required. Only experienced hunters, bounty hunters, or contractors should take on this contract due it's incredibly high level of danger! Please, bring heavy load ammo and hunting equipment - expect long stay and hunt. Shelter provided, but if you decide to hunt beyond the town's walls, you will achieve a complimentary pack for your efforts AND enthusiasm in completing the contract.

Contract #3:

Search party needed! Nothing destructive or dangerous seems to bugging me, but I have noticed that my "compound" has had some unwanted visitors come poking around. They don't seem to be hostile, but I need someone to come in and "scare" these visitors so they just stay away! I'd do something myself, but I'm far too frail to put my myself in *any* kind of danger. Even though I haven't seen of any kind of danger so far, there is no telling what kind of threat these troublemakers could actually produce if confronted to cease these nuisances!

You lean back into your room's chair, reviewing which one of these contracts you wanted to take on before going after the others. These all seem to be fairly simple - the pay, though not great for any of them, it was pretty good... You were confronted with the same dilemma as you faced down stairs; was the reward with the risk?

Which contract do you take?
