Chapter 50

Is this a trap? And what about this vault that the pair were talking about?
Doesn't seem like a trap
You are not surprised when Adriana and Cassiopeia insist on accompanying you. In fact the other members of your little entourage look like they'd like to come as well but you direct Lady Sophia and her friend to stay in the sanctuary and guard your prisoners. Nicia licks her lips as she looks over the figures of the naked teenaged acolytes bound and helpless and you remind her to keep an eye on the High Priestess.
"Don't let the chains on that nasty bitch fool you," you tell them gesturing to where the aged High Priestess crouches, "I doubt she's given up, and I wouldn't be surprised if she still has a few cards to play."
With those words of warning you turn back to Edlynn, looping the chain around her slender neck three times to form a makeshift collar. "Lead on, Your Holiness, let's see if these demons of yours are as dangerously wicked as I intend to be." With a firm slap on her toned ass you send her on her way.
She leads you towards the back of the sanctuary and through a narrow gap in the side wall of a small alcove. The doorway is not concealed in the traditional sense but its architectural design makes it all but invisible unless you know where to look. It would have taken you and your men a while to have found it and you can't help but wonder how many of the thousands of visitors to this great hall ever knew of its existence. Once through the small opening, the hallway curves around the back of the sanctuary with closets full of hanging robes, shelves for bowls, incense burners, candelabras and other religious paraphernalia that you can't even name. Two other entrances to the main hall are easy to locate from this side, and through the open door ways you hear the laughter of your men and the slap of flesh on bare flesh.
"Through here, Captain." Edlynn points to a large wooden door on the right of the curving hallway. Other than it's size there is nothing notable about the dust covered door, in fact it is not even locked. "Our storerooms are downstairs." You pause only long enough to light small hand-lamps whose flames barely light the steps at your feet.
The amount of food packed away in the rooms tucked into the Temple's foundation alone will make you fabulously wealthy, but when Edlynn leads you to a giant round door sealed with a bar as thick as your leg you grin in anticipation.
"These glyphs must be ordered in a Holy Blessing," the elegant blonde priestess explains as she turns giant spinning wheels the size of her head until a series of odd looking glyphs align to her satisfaction. At your side Cassia and Adriana are as eager as you to see the treasures in the holy vault.
"I'll need your help Captain Caderos, to open the vault door." Edlynn points to four sets of handles carved into the massive bronze door. "I beg you, Sir, don't get distracted by the trinkets inside." The priestess' clear blue eyes focus on yours in an unwavering stare. "Once we are done you can take what you will, but in the name of all that is Holy, let me tend to the wards."
She is right about how heavy the doors are. It takes all four of you to get the door to move on it's hidden hinges, but once moving it opens with surprising smoothness. You step back from the swinging motion of the great circular door and move to the opening with a lamp in one hand and your sword in the other. From the darkness comes a rush of cool air, dank and unpleasant that is only partially disguised by the sent of burning incense but more importantly, as you lift your lamp higher, the glimmer of gold.
What do you find in the treasure vaults of Athena's Temple?
