Chapter 2 by Storm Chyld Storm Chyld

Which of the fallen will rise first?

Doctor Raiden Nakahara

Doctor Nakahara sat in front of his locker, his fist wrapped gently around a pendent he wore. The pendant had been given to him by his father, the day he left for college in America. It had a Kanji symbol on it, that loosely translated to 'diligence in all things.' It was the only thing he had left of his family, after earth lost the war to the Elders. The war was halfway over, when he first found out that it was happening. Nine capital ships entered earth's atmosphere, targeting major cities across the globe. One of those cities was Tokyo, the capital of Japan, and the place where his family died, when the city was all but wiped out by the deadly vessel. Of the nine ships, three were brought down, but no city escaped unscathed. DC had been nearly obliterated, Paris was in ruins, and Seattle, the place he had called home, had been invaded shortly after the ship was to crash in the south end of the Metroplex, decimating most of Puyallup. Though the aliens had departed, thousands had died that day. Puyallup was now a desert, due the explosion from the ship, as it crashed, and Tacoma was long since abandoned.

Three months later, earth surrendered, and then the aliens began spreading their propaganda that it had all been a mistake, that they wanted peace. Soon after, the Peacekeepers were formed, and they formed a new world military under the control of their alien benefactors. People began returning to normal lives, under a new world order. Nakahara continued his pursuit of science, and his eventual Doctorate. A year after he graduated the Peacekeepers began a new initiative called SEI, or Scientific Expansion Initiative. Joining the program, he told himself he was simply following the next step in his scientific path.

SEI had been an amazing opportunity, and one he had been apart of for the last decade. He had seen magnificent things, from the Gene Therapy Clinics, that were opening all over the world, to advanced technology he had never believed he would learn. As he showed promise, he received promotions, and continued up the ranks, getting to see more and more classified research then he had ever dreamed of seeing.

Currently the Aliens were experimenting with what SEI referred to as the Big Four. Cybernetics enhancement through the use of an alien metal the Elders had perfected. Gene splicing, through a technique they had long since perfected. Quantum Flux, which powered the ships and allowed them to travel at speeds humans could barely fathom. And finally a chemical known as TX-46, alien in origin, and capable of some amazing things. In fact all of them were, and the goal was to see how they interacted with terrestrial compounds, and science, to see if they could further expand their knowledge. According to the Elders, this was the goal of space exploration, to seek out new life, and add their knowledge to their own.

It was all bullshit, though, and as much as Nakahara had lied to himself over the years, his scientific curiosity, was waning, as his desire for a free human world sapped his desire to keep going. He had seen the evidence, in the way the Elders treated failure, as friends and colleagues, were 'transferred' never to be heard from again.

With a sigh, Doctor Nakahara stood up, and closed his locker. Today was another day, of searching for breakthroughs. His team had been working for a year with TX-46, and testing it with other simple and complex compounds. The Elders hadn't seemed pleased with the slow progress, which frustrated a man who believed the superior scientific minds of the aliens, would understand that this was a methodical series of experiments, that could not be rushed.

Walking through the halls, he walked toward the lab. The black armored Peacekeepers, who stood guard, had become like decorations, that he barely noticed, unless they were actively yelling at his staff, which only happened on occasion. Most of them were grunts, so it was only the officers, that caused issues, when results weren't going as they desired.

Suddenly the flaxen began to sound, and red lights flashed in the halls. Eyes wide with fear, the doctor broke into a run heading toward the lab. Seeing the doors ahead, along with a pair of obsidian soldiers, who stood stalk still, despite the warning alarm blaring.

“Lock it down!” He screamed at the stupid soldiers, who rarely did anything, without orders first.

They barely turned to regard him, as he dashed toward them, when an explosion from the lab, burst forward. Raiden through up his hands, as the shock wave lifted him up, and threw him backwards. The ensuing fire from the explosion engulfed his helpless body, and he screamed in agony, as the flame devoured him.

What happened next?
