Chapter 34

What happens next?
Do the responsible thing
Sighing, you haul Indra to her feet, not resisting as she gloms onto you. Getting her back on the horse at this point was out of the question the way she was writhing. You're able to deflect her amorous attention enough for you to see and you set off in the direction away from the fighting. It didn't really matter who won the battle: as far as distractions go, loosing a dryad on your enemies wasn't half bad.
At first it's almost impossible to make progress with Indra feeling you up in every way possible, even Aegis seems nervous how slowly you're moving. However there seemed to be a narcotic after-effect to the venom and soon she's dead weight, moaning quietly and spasming against you. You were very glad that whatever demon you'd encountered on the way here, it was the dryads problem now. This venom was nasty, you hate to think of what the demon would be doing that it needed to hyper-arouse and paralyze its prey simultaneously.
Despite your appearance, you were trained as a paladin all your life, with some difficulty you manage to lift Indra over Aegis's back. Panting heavily, you lean against your faithful steed for support. The horse looks at you and you swear he raises an eyebrow, as though saying, 'I could have just knelt down.' Another painful whistle shrieks through the trees and both of you flinch, "alright Aegis, lets get out of-" the ringing in your ears almost stops you from hearing the wingbeats until it's too late. Almost.
In one fluid motion, you unsheathe the relic sword and spin, catching the diving imp completely by surprise as you slice through its midsection. The creature bursts into fire and foul smelling slime which unfortunately maintains its momentum and splatters all over you. The fire sputters out after a few panicked seconds but the brimstone smelling slime sticks around, stinging your nose with every breath and bringing tears to your eyes. Rubbing slime from your watery eyes, you see three more flapping shapes coalesce out of the darkness and a raspy but surprisingly cultured voice addresses you, "Alas, poor Yorgim. I knew him well. Tell me, little miss, would you be willing to part with that weapon in exchange for free passage?"
You blink. Did an imp just call you "miss?" It was hard to tell in the darkness but you think the speaker is the center imp. He's bigger than the other two, almost human sized, and sporting an impressive set of horns arching back over his head. In spite of his polite manner you feel an uncharacteristic hate boiling in your gut from the sound of his voice. You laugh, "There's no way you'd let me leave if I gave up my only weapon." The leader nods almost regretfully and lands with a solid WHUMP on the leafy ground, "You speak the truth fair lady, my comrades would have a difficult time restraining themselves. May I ask what you're doing out here at this time of night?" As he speaks the other two imps fan out, circling around the three of you so you couldn't watch all of them at once, "I'm taking this sword to Gerlangen so that my sisters can purge the demon threat." He strokes his chin thoughtfully, "I see, I see... have we met before? There's something familiar about your aura." One of the lesser imps gets too close and Aegis snaps at him, drawing a string of guttural curses as the demon hastily retreats.
"You probably saw me at the Abbey, there were just so many more impressive demons I'm afraid I don't remember you." The greater imp gives you a surprised look, "there's no need for rudeness dear sister. I was not present for the Abbey raid. Although..." He claps his hands together animatedly, "Ah! Of course! Which of my brethren are you carrying in your womb? Sneerag? Dongleong?" The hatred in your gut intensifies and you realize it isn't your own: your Master knows this imp and hates him with a burning passion, which was all the more reason for you to keep your guard up. Another rending shriek pierces the night air and everyone staggers, imps included. The fat imp to your right pipes up, "hurry up Tandelus, Nybibas hurting head!"
The leader, Tandelus, bares his teeth and rounds on the squat creature, raising a clawed hand menacingly. The smaller imp cowers and scurries to your other side, huddling comically behind a small sapling. After a tense moment Tandelus looks back to you, once more all smiles and decorum, "I apologize for my subordinate, as you can tell he has no sense of timing or grammar. You see, my lady, we have something of a time table to keep. That horrible screeching you're hearing is a Nybibas, a terrible void of a demon we unfortunately had to deal with to extend our range." He pauses, "Are you at all familiar with demon conjuration?" You shake your head suspiciously.
"Of course not, why would you be? Would you like to learn? I understand you'll be having a very important demon in your life rather soon..." He motions towards your stomach. You didn't think hearing about this right now was your best course of action but all you could really do was wait for an opening. A crash course in demonology from a demon was probably the best way to prepare for motherhood... at least in your situation. Of course, it wasn't like your Master couldn't tell you once he was born. Right? A pit of worry begins to form in your stomach. What if demon pregnancies are different? What if there's a ritual or something that needs to happen after the birth? Tandelus surveys your ragtag little group, patiently awaiting your response.
