Djinn discrimination

As soon as you step outside, Maya turns to Sadie excitedly. “Sadie! Can we do the thing? Please please please?” The half-dragon is bouncing on her toes and looking at the djinn hopefully.

Sadie’s eyes light up. “Oooo, yes, let’s! Come over here, it’ll be safer in the grass!”

You follow, confused, as the two of them run over to a picnic area on the arrival center grounds. Maya spreads her wings and waits, watching as Sadie stands in front of her. As you get closer, she puts her hands out, palms up. The constant breeze around her picks up, and her blue hair begins moving as if in a windstorm. Maya’s hair and clothes begin moving too, and soon you see her lifting slightly off the ground!

Maya giggles and slowly flaps her wings, lifting higher until she’s almost five feet high. Sadie is concentrating, and you can see she’s doing most of the work keeping Maya suspended. Slowly, Maya lowers back down to the ground. As her feet touch down, she bounces over and hugs Sadie, and the two of them giggle, smiling at each other.

Figuring that the display is over, you approach the pair. “I assume you normally can’t fly, Maya?”

Maya nods, still grinning. “My wings are too small, they’re strong enough to stop a punch or a knife, but otherwise they’re mostly for looks. With Sadie helping I can fly a little though!”

You nod, “Well, I’m glad you two are friends already. Sadie, before we head home, can we talk for a minute? If you’re uncomfortable in front of Maya she can wander around a bit.”

Sadie smiles, “It’s fine, she can stay. Maya is a nice person, and I don’t want to hide anything from anyone who I’m close to.”

You find a comfortable looking patch of grass under a tree and sit down in the shade, and Sadie sits beside you. Maya grins and lays down nearby in the sun, enjoying the afternoon.

“So, Sadie...tell me why you’re here. Everyone I’ve met from the old world has a story about why they left, and it’s obvious that you’re eager to join our family. I don’t mean to pry, but I would like to know your story.”

Sadie bites her lip nervously, and she looks away as she speaks. “You promise not to laugh at me?”

“Of course. I promise the same to all of the girls. I want you to feel safe and happy with us.”

She stares at you for a moment, seemingly amazed. “What do you know about genies?”

“Not much other than legends, most of which are probably untrue.”

Sadie nods. “Djinn are a variety of genies, associated with elemental air. Each of the classical elements has a variant of genie, and each variant is generally pretty similar amongst themselves. Djinn are generally thought of as carefree and honestly kind of dumb. Also, we are considered pretty promiscuous. It’s not always true, but everyone in the old world treats us like dumb sluts. It gets old in a hurry, and even once I’d had enough and come through the portal, the other girls at the Arrival Center looked at me in a very familiar way. I could hear some of the things they talked about, how I was just here for an easy life, attaching myself to some guy as a plaything.”

You can see her clenching her fists, and her blue eyes flash as she continues. “I thought I was getting away from the prejudice, but I walked into even more of it here. Then, Maya visited, and somehow noticed that I was unhappy.”

You nod, “She’s a perceptive girl, she would notice.”

Sadie smiles at the lounging half-dragon. “Yeah, she is. Anyway, she started talking about your group, and how no one judges each other.”

You smile, “I can’t imagine any of the girls being mean spirited like that.”

Maya speaks up, “No way! Anna is an angel, like you say, my Josh. Elys is elegant and refined, but so caring and friendly. And I don’t think Lynn could be mean if you wanted her to be!”

Nodding, you agree with Maya’s assessment. Sadie looks between the two of you, a growing smile on her face. “That’s why I was so excited to join you, it seems like a group that will let me be myself, even if myself is sometimes a dumb slut...”

You gently take Sadie by her hand, shaking your head. “I don’t like that word, Sadie. You’re allowed to enjoy sex without being called names. And I don’t think you’re dumb, we just had a nice conversation and you explained your situation very well. You’re beautiful and happy and energetic. You and Maya will probably be the **** of me, but it will be fun the whole way.”

Sadie stares at you for a second, then tackles you in a hug. “Thank you for those words....you have no idea how much of a relief it is to hear...”

You smile, holding her for a while as she sighs happily. Eventually, she sits up and grins. “Sorry, got a little excited. Can you take me....home? I want to meet the other girls!”

You stand, helping Sadie to her feet, as Maya jumps up excitedly. “Of course! I’m sure they’ll all love you!”
