Chapter 3 by Kraftwerk271 Kraftwerk271

Who has, is, or interacts with one of these things?

DirtWorks Company Employees

Golems have been part of society for centuries, yet the ability to make them appear and even act indistinguishably from humans has been a recent innovation in golem design and script technology; the DirtWorks Corporation has been at the forefront of these latest technological advancements in golem technology, they provide golems both to enterprises in bulk and individual golems to consumers, the company takes care of manufacturing, script programming and golem maintenance.

Human-looking golems have been part of the labor **** for decades, mainly doing manual labor and jobs that were not very desirable for humans, the cost of manufacturing these golems has gone down dramatically over the years since the source materials are so easy to acquire (dirt), economies of scale and automation in both script printing, and dirt sculpting, have made the process of procuring a golem body a trivial thing for corporations like DirtWorks, in fact it’s gotten so cheap that the default appearance for a golem is human. In addition, when the profession doesn't require a bespoke human personality, or customizations (which do require specialized human labor to edit and assemble the base components of a script), the scripts become exponentially inexpensive. Having said that, script writers haven't been able to program golems to perform certain jobs effectively, the heuristics just aren't good enough.

Manual labor jobs were the first to go away, but eventually schools, universities and hospitals started incorporating golems into their employee rosters due to their low price and, where possible, effectiveness. However, due to a global recession and rising unemployment amongst the general population, worldwide protests made governments all around the world ban the use of golems for performing more advanced professions and it became illegal to do so. Despite the fact that the scripts in these golems contained instructions to emulate human behavior, a personality, and to conceal their true nature as golems, they would eventually be found out by colleagues, patients and students; perhaps a group of students stalking their professor and noticing they never go outside the university grounds, or a colleague never introducing friends or family despite having an extroverted personality. Whatever the reason may be for the discovery of a golem’s true nature, the golems would be de-sculpted, repurposed into soil and the owner be charged hefty fines, or even risk jail time if they’re repeat offenders.

Having said that, there’s a conspiracy that companies like DirtWorks still produce golems to perform such banned professions; these golems would have even more convincing backstories than the ones from the past. Some rumors say that there are even whole golem families out there, with social connections to other concealed golems masquerading as humans, legitimizing each other’s human facade. Of course this is all speculation and the conspiracy hasn’t reached outside dedicated internet forums.

What kind of employee?
