Dinner

They four of them all sit down around the table and talk over dinner. They talk for a while when eventually the topic of sports came up, “I didn’t do a lot of sports when I was in school” Lance says, “Except for wrestling, which was great. I was the best guy on my team. Actually won the medal in my senior year.” Henry claps him on the shoulder, “Yup. You were pretty great. Thanks to me of course. I helped him practice all the time. I wrestled too, almost went to regionals but I pulled my shoulder pretty bad at the worst time. But I taught him everything I knew about wrestling.”

Lance chuckles, “Yeah, like how to play dirty.” Henry puts his hands up defensively “Hey it’s only breaking the rules if you get caught. And besides it served you well, didn’t it?” Michael chuckles, “Since you’re gay that must have added a whole new level of fun to the whole thing.” Lance looks at him “Hey. Wrestling is a honorable, serious sport, passed down through generations with a rich history to it. And yes it absolutely did.”

Everyone gets a good chuckle from that, even Jacob who didn’t know why they were laughing but he joined in. He’s been a little… distracted, his mind swirling around with mixed feelings. “What about you?” Michael asks Jacob, “Are you on your wrestling team?” Jacob shakes his head, Lance says “He’s not. But I still practice on him sometimes. Gotta keep my skills sharp!” “So he’s gonna know some things. Look at you all, a house full of gladiators. That’s kinda…” he smiles.

Henry notices Jacob just staring at his lap with a fork in his hand, “Hey son, the food’s in front of ya, alright?” Jacob looks back to his plate quickly, frazzled. Michael leans over and whispers something into the Dad’s ear, then gives him a pat on the chest. He thinks for a second and nods, getting a big smile on his face. Jacob and Lance are both curious, but neither their dad or Michael elaborate…
