Dining out

Fifteen minutes before your reservation time, your date texts that she's “handling a crisis" and will likely be 30 minutes late. The hostess makes the excellent suggestion that you wait in the bar until your party arrives. You spend a very pleasant hour sipping wine, flirting with the cute bartender, and enjoying how differently people treat you when you're wearing a $5,000 suit. You even get the phone number of a hot blond who wouldn’t have given you the time of day a week ago.

When the tall, statuesque brunette enters the bar, you are far from the only person trying not to stare. Her blue dress is elegant but not slinky, highlighting her trim figure without being too tight. Her long black hair is piled stylishly on top of her head, above a face that is…mostly hidden behind an enormous pair of ugly square-rimmed tortoise-shell glasses.

She looks around, does a slight double take, and walks over to your bar stool. "I almost didn't recognize you. That's a very nice suit," the mystery woman greets you.

Your brain shifts into overdrive trying to think where you might know her from. “Uh, thank you, Miss…?”

“It’s me.” She gives a small, confident smile. She reaches up and raises the glasses and you recognize Wonder Woman’s exquisite face.

“Right!” you say a little too loudly. “Diana, wow! I did not recognize you at all.”

She smiles unapologetically as she puts the glasses back in pace. “Well that is the point. The whole secret identity thing.”

“Of course. Yeah, now I see how you get away with it.” You signal the hostess, and a minute later you're being shown to your table. A number of diners, both men and women, look up as Diana passes. A few of them even notice you.

The hostess guides you to a small table by the window. Diana gives you a bit of side eye when you pull her chair out for her, but she sits down. As you drop into the chair across from her, the hostess hands you leather-bound menus and asks if she can get you anything to drink. Diana orders a bottle of white wine that sounds fancy, and the hostess disappears.

“Those glasses make a surprisingly good disguise” you offer after a moment.

She gives a tight smile. “Don’t they? I got the idea from…a friend. I think it’s not that they hide my face so much as people just can’t imagine Wonder Woman wearing them.”

“Well they fooled me and I was expecting you.”

Diana gives another tight smile but remains silent. A moment passes as you study the menu. “Thank you for recommending this place. I've never been." No kidding - even the salads would've been out of your price range before your recent infusion of **** cash.

"You said you like seafood, and they have the best in town."
