Diamond earrings

Chapter 16 by BenSmittWriter

You walk up to take a closer look at your reflection in the mirror. Attached to your earlobes are a small pair of diamond stud earrings.

"Yes." Drake says. "I got them at a pawn shop down the street and enchanted them last night. The left one grants you extrasensory perception, and the right one is for hyper-cognition."

"Oh." You say, losing some of your initial indignation. "Did... did they have to be earrings? I can't do auditions wearing these."

"Really. Why not?" Drake asks, sounding genuinely confused. You stumble through your answer, trying desperately to avoid saying anything sexist or homophobic but still heavily implying that straight men don't wear earrings. Drake sighs. "Honestly, sometimes it seems like human social norms are just a hodgepodge of ever-changing self-contradicting nonsense. I could have sworn that at this point in history people had all gotten over stuff like that."

"Look, earrings are the best way to go when it comes to resonating with mental abilites, unless you'd prefer wearing a tiara or having something surgically injected into the base of your skull. They're tiny little jewels, and I doubt anyone will give them a second glance. Plus, they give you access to superpowers, and you'll only need to wear them until you get to the point where you don't need training wheels any more."

"Yeah." You say, considering Drake's words. They weren't really that noticeable, and even if someone did notice them, more attention wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Heck, if you were going to be a shapeshifter, you were going to need to get rid of any hang-ups you have over stuff like this. "I'm sorry. I am grateful; it was just a little unexpected, that's all."

"So how do they work?" You ask, changing the subject. "Is there like a magic word to activate them or something?"

"No. You or I have to activate them internally by manipulating them with magical energy. To start off with, I'll turn them on and keep them on for you, but whenever I do that, you should really try to concentrate on what I'm doing, and you should also spend some time every day trying to replicate the process yourself." Drake explains.

"Gotcha." You say eagerly. "So, turn them on. Let's give them a spin."

"I would recommend sitting down first. Maybe dimming the lights too. Adapting to new senses can be disorienting." Drake says. You turn off the lights and sit back down at your kitchen table. After confirming you're ready, Drake tells you he is going to activate ESP first.

You concentrate and try to sense what he's doing. You might have felt a sensation of warmth passing up from your chest to your head, but it was subtle, and you might have been imagining it. Suddenly the ESP kicks in, and you are assaulted with a cacophony of sound. Every tiny noise around you is amplified, the lights are brighter, the feeling of your seat is sharper, and even the odor becomes stronger.

You can see why Drake asked you to sit down for this.
