Devise an Interface

"You?" scoffed Specs. "I doubt it. The amount of data would overwhelm whatever sized brain you've got in that skull of yours. Explain this training you've had."

For the next few minutes you described the basics of the VR system on the Odyssey and then went into further details about aspects where you had the most experience such as converting data from the Earth database into VR simulation content, and tailoring portions of the interface. However, you left out the bits about primarily using it for sexual entertainment and inserting your dick into a special tube for added stimulation during the VR sessions.

"There are parallels, but even if we can modify the multi-synaptic interface, the data it would transmit would be unintelligible to anything but a machine," Specs stated. "It would need to be converted somehow," he continued, and then he turned to look at MPAD-24 hovering next to you.

You were already looking at it with the same thought. "Could the MPAD-24 unit do that?" you inquired.

Specs paused for moment. "That's unconventional, but it might be able to configured to provide a basic conversion of the raw data stream into something you can visualize and understand. "

"MPAD-24, can you alter form into a set of wearable view screens, similar in size to Specs' goggles?" you asked.

In response, MPAD-24 shifted into something like a visor that you could wear.

"That's a start," noted Specs, "but it will still need to convert the signals into something you can understand. This might help." He took the visor and then navigated through a series of MPAD-24's menus until he reached a configuration mode. After making a few entries he handed it back. "I can only provide it with a basic starting point, but this will allow it convert the data into basic structures and types. Once it's active, you'll need to define and convert those into something recognizable to have it make sense. That's between you and the MPAD unit. Meanwhile, I'll get started on reversing the multi-synaptic port for data access."

As Specs began to work, you put the visor on, but the screen was blank. "MPAD-24, let's start with some VR basics. Display a flat 2D horzizon with a grid." After some minor tweaks, the visor began to display a simple grid-like floor. Next, you had it create some lines and simple 2D objects such as triangles and squares before graduating to 3D objects like cubes and spheres. However, the progress was very slow. Although Specs was still working to update the port, it seemed likely that he would finish long before you would be able to create more than a handful of basic building blocks to use for converting 6T9's data into recognizable items in your VR world. If only MPAD-24 had some faster method of communicating or a database to draw upon.

Suddenly you had an idea. "MPAD-24, are you capable of using a multi-synaptic interface similar to the one used by 6T9?" Instantly, you had a very strange sensation as if tiny needles were being inserted into your temples along the outer edges of the visor. Within moments, that was replaced by a familiar sensation of something rummaging through your mind. "MPAD-24, is that you?"

The sensation changed, and something seemed to approach your conscious awareness. You heard MPAD-24 say "Establishing synchronization." Suddenly you felt very dizzy as the images shown to your eyes seemed to shift and waver. Eventually the imagery stabilized, and as it did you saw a glowing geodesic shape hovering before you. At the same time, you sensed that MPAD-24 was effectively hovering in your mind as well. It was similar to the way 6T9 had entered your mind, but this was much more vivid since the image displayed on the visor was providing additional visual stimulus. "Synaptic link established," it said.

"MPAD-24, to make this easier to navigate, we will use my memories to serve as the reference database. To help find and identify key memories, 6T9 had me recall certain events. As I recall things from my memories, I want you to examine them and create a representative and easily identifiable construct for each thing. Do you understand?" you asked, and it affirmed.

For the next several minutes, you called up memories of things that might be applicable for your upcoming VR session, one in which you would need to first comprehend the data from 6T9, and then hopefully navigate through her system to find a recent checkpoint of her data that preserved her sentient personality. Eventually, you'd exhausted your initial ideas, and you paused to think of something new. Just then, MPAD-24 announced, "Based on the data shown, memory markers have been identified."

You recalled that during your connection to 6T9, she had been able to find memory markers too. Based on that, MPAD-24 should now be able to navigate your memories, allowing those to to serve as a visual reference for items shown on MPAD-24's VR interface. To test that, you asked MPAD-24 to produce a basic VR simulation to see how it responded. "Show me a scene of the downtown area in my hometown." After MPAD-24 briefly searched through applicable memories, you were soon shown a view of the intersection of Main Street and First Avenue, with large buildings at each corner. Meanwhile, a few vehicles headed back and forth along the streets while people walked along the sidewalks. You noted a few temporal anomalies such as one of the buildings sporting a mixture of it's original facade mixed with that of a later renovation. These were likely due to MPAD-24 having taken memories from multiple points in time. During a few more tests ranging from outdoor scenes to indoor locations, MPAD-24's simulations produced similar results with minor issues, but the overall effect was satisfactory. Hopefully this would work.
