Chapter 22 by IsleyOfTheNorth IsleyOfTheNorth

Press the first button.

Detainee 1983 is being readied.

"zzz... Sorry, for the wait. There's some extra protocols I gotta follow for Level B. Let's see here... To be honest bud, 1983 looks pretty tame compared to the others I've seen at B. But who knows, right? Never judge a book by its pages or whatever. By the way you up for drinks again later? Don't answer now, just sit on it and let me know later, haha. Alight, you know the drill bud. Detainee 1983 is ready for you...zzz."

The butterflies fluttering inside your stomach remind you of yesterday, only this time it wasn't caused by anxiousness or nervousness but excitement. Not everyone got to talk to a Neurolink war criminal on their afternoon shift. It could be seen as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You laugh as your true color rears its ugly head. You realize any pretense of morality left the room when you started working here. Flicking the tip of your thumb you wait a moment before pressing the buzzer to let Detainee 1983 in.

It's rare you see someone and tense up like this. Not the kind where your knees buckle and your shoulders stiffen. But the kind where your body enters a sort of paralysis and mental fog. The kind where your adrenaline starts kicking in and your heart starts beating faster. Even if you hadn't known about the man's criminal history and militia background you feel you woulda reacted the same. As Detainee 1983 takes his seat in the middle of the room under the white fluorescent light, you see the small implant above his left eye. "The Neurolink," you whisper to yourself.

Detainee 1983, Neurolink™ V2.31

G: I have Detainee 1983.

A: I will be pulling up Detainee 1983's profile. Simply follow the instructions that appear on your screen. Their responses are automatically recorded and inputted into the system. If you have any questions from here on out, simply type 'Hey, AVA' and type out your question. Press the first button on your control device to proceed.

Ask Detainee 1983 about the militia group, the Sons of Liberty.

This was glaringly different from A.V.A's usual line of questions. You clear your throat and relay the question to the Detainee who now sits leaning back against the chair. His posture was defiant like he couldn't give two shits about you or the interrogation. "I thought this guy was on treatment for a month now." For the first time, you type back to A.V.A about a problem.

G: He is not responding.

A: Ask Detainee 1983 about his Neurolink™.

You ask again but still no response. This one-sided exchange goes on for the next 10 or so questions until you become frustrated and begin typing to A.V.A about the issue,

G: Hey A.V.A, why is Detainee 1983 not responding?

A: Scans have shown that Detainee 1983 possesses an unidentified implant that is interfering with Neurolink™. The unidentified implant is also interfering with his medications and diet which further negates the treatment. He has been generally unresponsive during his detainment period.

G: So Neurolink isn't working at all?

A: There are small spikes in Neurolink activity when the Detainee experiences strong emotions. We have documented two such instances when the spikes were at their highest. On June 19, 2154, at 12:10 P.M when we notified the status of his deceased companion. On June 25, 2154, at 2:32 A.M when he was masturbating in his bed.

G: Was his companion part of the Sons of Liberty?

A: Yes. Detainees 1983 and 1984 were both captured at the same time and place.

G: A.V.A, let me know if Neurolinkhas any spikes during the interrogation.

A: Confirmed. Access granted. Pulling up Detainee 1983's Neurolink activity.

The screen turns blank and a new window pops up with the Detainee's face, identification number, and registered serial number. Underneath it is a line graph that blinks and updates every second. At the moment the line holds at a steady pace near the very bottom, indicating that there's little to no Neurolink activity.

G: Hey A.V.A, am I allowed to ask the Detainee some questions of my own?

A: Confirmed. Access granted. This interrogation is still being recorded.

What questions do you ask?
