Dave, volunteer in a women’s self-defense course

Dave was a good man. He was now in his mid-forties and had what you would call a dad bod, but he was still attractive.

His wife had died two years earlier, so he was a widow. She had left him a good inheritance, so he did not need to work. Instead, he used his time to help others. He volunteered at children centers and other institutions. Everybody liked him as he was always friendly with everyone.

He used to spend the mornings at the local pub. He was friends with Mary, the pub landlady. They often had endless chats about anything.

One day, Dave was reading the local newspaper:

“My good, the number of attacks on young women had increase a lot in the last years” – He said to Mary with a concerned tone.

“I know. My sister Susan is now working at a training center for young women. She teaches self-defense” – Mary commented.

“Oh, that’s great. I would love to be of some help” – Dave said.

“I know they are always looking for male volunteers” – Mary said – “She always complains that the volunteers only stay for one session. I do not know why. Still, I could put you two in contact, if you want” – Mary said.

“That would be perfect” – Dave said, while having a sip of his beer.

A few days later Susan called Dave. She explained that they needed male volunteers to help with the class. At the moment they only had one volunteer (her husband) but they needed, at least, one more volunteer for the long term. Dave asked Susan what the help would entail, and she answered that she would send all the information by e-mail, so he could read everything. Susan insisted that it was very important that he read all the document with attention. Dave gave her his e-mail and contact details.

A few minutes later, Dave received the e-mail from Susan, He opened the document, and it was a 10 pages document. No way he would read all of that. It was probably about confidentiality and other things that had nothing to do with him. Susan had also asked him to sign the document electronically, in case he agreed with everything, so he just signed the document.

Susan replied thanking him and asking him to go to the training center next Monday. He would have to go twice a week as the group he had been assigned trained on Mondays and Thursdays.

Dave smiled. He was sure that he would be able to help these young women to learn how to defend themselves. Little he knew the way he would do it.
