Dance
The bass is a living thing, thumping through the soles of your shoes and straight into your chest. Kayla’s hand is still in yours from when she pulled you onto the dance floor, and you’re not letting go. You’ve spent the last three years being the quiet guy who watches from the edge of rooms. Tonight you’re done with that.
You tug her closer as the beat shifts, your other hand settling on the curve of her waist. She doesn’t flinch. If anything, she steps in until there’s barely space between you. Her top is soft under your fingers, and you can feel the warmth of her skin through it. Up close she smells like vanilla and something sharper—maybe the vodka in her cup—and her sharp eyeliner makes her eyes look even bigger when she looks up at you.
“You’re actually good at this,” she says, voice raised just enough to reach you. Her hips move with the music, brushing yours on every other beat. “Thought you’d be all awkward shoulders and no rhythm.”
You laugh, low, and let your hand slide a little lower on her back. “Maybe I just needed the right motivation.”

Kayla’s smile turns wicked. She rolls her body into yours on the next drop, deliberate, and your breath catches. Her thigh slides between yours for a second. The contact is electric. You can feel the heat of her, the soft press of her breasts against your chest when the crowd pushes you both together. Every time you glance toward the kitchen you catch Sadie’s silhouette—still talking to that guy, still laughing at something he says—but each time the sight twists less and less. Right now there’s only the girl in your arms and the way she’s looking at you like she wants you to do something about it.
So you do.
You lean down without overthinking it. Kayla meets you halfway. Her mouth is warm, tasting faintly of cherry and alcohol, and when your lips part she doesn’t hesitate—she kisses you back like she’s been waiting for the invitation. Her tongue brushes yours, teasing, and her fingers curl into the front of your shirt, pulling you deeper. The kiss turns hungry fast. Your hand on her waist tightens; the other comes up to cup the back of her neck, thumb stroking just behind her ear. She makes a small sound against your mouth that shoots straight through you.
When you finally break for air, her forehead stays pressed to yours. Both of you are breathing harder than the dancing explains. Her lips are a little swollen, shiny, and she’s grinning like she just won something.
“Damn, Danny,” she murmurs, close enough that you feel the words more than hear them. “You don’t do anything halfway, do you?”
You don’t answer with words. You just kiss her again—slower this time, deeper, letting your tongue explore the way she opens for you. Her body melts into yours. One of her hands slips under the hem of your shirt, fingers splaying warm against the small of your back. The party keeps raging around you, but it feels distant. All you can focus on is the slick slide of her mouth, the way her hips keep moving in little circles against you, the soft catch in her breath when your teeth graze her lower lip.
Across the room you’re vaguely aware of movement—Sadie maybe turning, maybe seeing—but the thought doesn’t stop you. Not tonight. Not when Kayla is kissing you like she wants to crawl inside your skin and the music is pounding and your body is finally doing what it’s wanted to do since she first smiled at you in the living room.
She pulls back just enough to speak, lips brushing yours with every word. “There’s a back porch. Quieter. If you want to… keep this going.”
Her eyes are dark, pupils blown, and her hand is still under your shirt, thumb stroking slow circles on your skin. The offer hangs there, heavy with promise. You could follow her outside right now. You could find a dark corner and see exactly how far this spark wants to burn. Or you could do something else—something that would drag the knot in your chest back into the light.
The choice is yours.
