“Nothing says romance like your mom showing up,” Michelle says. She’s in the passenger seat.

Riley takes a deep breath for patience and keeps her eyes on the road. They’re almost there.

“I mean,” Michelle goes on as she watches trees rushing past. This two-lane road through the woods is actually quite pretty, although it looks like rain. “I guess she is like a hot MILF.”

Riley’s eyes pop open. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Well, she is. She’s pretty like you, and she’s got a figure like…” Michelle snorts. “Like I wish I had.”

“You look good. Since when are you creeping on my mom?”

“What? It’s common knowledge, Riley. Especially now that everyone knows that the divorce is happening. She probably has to fight off guys with a bat when you and Kayla aren’t around.”

“OK, let’s not talk about that. I understand that you’re mad, but this is the right thing to do. We have to deal with this now. If we avoid it, it’ll just get worse. This probably won’t be fun, but we’ll be glad that we handled it this way,” Riley says.

“First, I’m not mad. And second, you sounded really mature right there. I’m proud of you.”

“OK, can you not say stuff that draws attention to the age thing?”

“Right. Sorry. I am proud of you, though.”

“Don’t be proud of me,” Riley says firmly. “Be… all horned up for this big, strong athlete and her mighty penis. Because I’m so dominant and reliable. And I’ll protect you from serial killers. Because we’re in the spooky forest. This looks like a Jason Vorhees forest, you know?”

Michelle takes that in.

“OK, I take back what I said about maturity,” she says, looking out her window.

“Love you too, babe.”

The place is cute, although it’s not very big. Michelle punches the code into the lock on the door and they carry their bags inside. This place supposedly sleeps eight, but that’s pure shenanigans. There’s a tiny loft with a queen bed, but it overlooks the living room. There’s another bedroom on the first floor that actually has a door and some privacy, but that’s a queen bed beside a set of bunk beds… so that is obviously where Mom and Kayla will be.

“Super romantic,” Michelle says in a singsong voice as she puts her bags down.

“I’m sorry,” Riley sings back. At least she and Michelle will have their own bathroom. “It’s cute though, right?”

“Yeah,” Michelle admits. “And it has a hot tub. Can’t wait to hot tub with your hot MILF mom.”

“Who’s immature now?”

Riley knows that Michelle is just messing around. She only dated men before things happened between her and Riley. She’s just being obnoxious, and it’s justified. This was supposed to be a weekend for the two of them.

Michelle heads out to the car to get the groceries, leaving Riley standing in the loft bedroom. She can hear the clock ticking downstairs in the kitchen; this place is that small. Every move makes something creak.

Riley cringes. This will be very cozy with the four of them.
