Costume shopping

You feel so right wearing Dawn. She's so perfectly phony, as if she's lived her whole life working to become suitable to be a full-body, full-self mask for you. You can't help but notice that a little of the original Dawn's contempt for your real self has rubbed off onto that real self, so that you don't really want to be that guy any more. You're pretty sure that you don't want to stay as Dawn permanently, but why not enjoy some time as Dawn for a while?

You're about to set out to shop for a costume for your new body, but the Dawn self you're wearing prompts you to get out the wooden case with those remarkable black and brown "pens" responsible for making you the woman you are for now: something about it now seems odd. You open it up and look at the inside of the lid. It looks like the same type of wood as the rest of the case, but it's slightly paler and the pattern of the grain doesn't quite match the rest of the lid. You hadn't noticed that before! Being Dawn seems to have changed the way you observe things, and, much as you'd hate to admit it, in this case for the better. That lid isn't solid wood. You tap it with a fake fingernail and, sure enough, the tap seems muffled. With the too-long fingernail of your right pinky finger, you deftly pry up the edge of the veneer that lines the box lid.
