A Quest of Gold and Bones (3)- Dao of Hope

The twins healed quite quickly due to the bloodline they carried. And it was also worth mentioning that since both of them possessed a dual blessing. Their affinities with earth and wind had aided them greatly in this field. And by the time they had finished taking the important bones and organs from the dire wolf. The group were ready to continue through the forest.

Most of these creatures they discovered further into the forest required 2 if not 3 of them to get involved. And the deeper they ventured, the more challenging these skirmishes became. Orion was growing weary as he started to notice a pattern about these beasts. And that was their intelligence. From an initial glance you would assume the creatures would’ve sensed their inferiority and fled or choose to hide. But after his encounter with the third large beast. He almost sensed that they were trying to stall them, or weaken their vitality to the point the group would use all their power.

There was way too much suspicions surrounding this place, and Orion felt as though he needed more time in order to carefully understand whether or not his suspicions were correct.

The air had grown incredibly humid whilst a sudden wave of heat fell upon the forest. The twins were barely clothed in order to combat the unconformable air. As it looked as though only Kalfa was able to move around almost unscathed by the burning wave of heat. Orion glanced down at the figure beside him. Vox was visibly struggling to keep up, beads of sweat dotted across the young mans olive face.

He wasn’t a knight after all, and mages tended to need either a lot of potions or time to rest in order to sustain what was required of them during these quests. Orion couldn’t expect much from a young prodigy, he could only hope to find a safe place for the group to rest sooner rather than later.

A golden road appeared along the forest bed. Misshaped tiles made from beige sandy stones. The group noticed the sudden change of the footing beneath their soles. This had to mean they were closing in on their target. Orion had already used 2/3rds of his potions. So had the twins. Kalfa was from the Rode Kingdom so her reliance on potions wasn’t as much as the others. Instead, she carried berries and fruits to help her vitals.

Elisa paid close attention to Kalfa and her handy small pouch containing various nuts, fruits, odd wooden things and trinkets. Although Elisa had never exactly been fond of any kind of beast folk. She did begin to find herself slowly opening up towards the rough talking furry eared girl in their party.

Being the only two women, Elisa would naturally gravitate towards Kalfa at times. She herself wasn't sure when she had become so cordial with the beast girl.

Kalfa was mid way chewing on some honey stalks when she felt someone watching her, longer than one would expect. She turned her large round eyes to find the beautiful Elven woman beside her.

"What do you want?"

"fufufu oh nothing-just...admiring you?" Kalfa's brows lowered whilst she eyed the proud looking beauty with suspicion.

"What? you don't believe I could admire someone like you?" Elisa asked

"I don't believe you're honest enough to admire others but yourself."

"H-how...rude!" her fair cheeks turned red as Elisa herself couldn't refute what had just been said. All her life she was raised beneath the eyes of her doting father. Raised in a temple filled with beautiful Elves, who taught her about etiquette, music and sex.

Their way of life was completely different when compared to the lifestyle humans and beast folk especially lived through.

She never felt that her own desires were important, everything she had done in her life so far was because it was expected of her.

"Puahaha! you see you Elves aren't as stone faced as you'd have us all believe. I can smell your kind from a mile away." said Kalfa proudly.

"You needn't be so crass! And its not like your people are not well known for back stabbing and theft...suppose its in your nature isnt it?"

"say that again I fucking dare you?" Roared Kalfa, her outburst drew deep scowl from the two men walking in front of the pair. She quickly lowered her gaze and kept quiet.

Elisa monitored the quick interaction between Kalfa and Orion, and a playful smile creased against her pretty mouth.

"You love him dont you?" she abruptly asked

"W-wait! w-w-wha-wha-what are you saying all of a sudden?"

"Oh my look how red you've gotten...so you do love him. Hmm not bad, I imagine a robust specimen like him is exactly what gets a wild girl like yourself in the mood."

"H-hey...I..didnt...J-just mind your business! and what of it...yeah I...i like his ..i mean I like him-there I said it"

"Hahaha im sorry but you're just too easy...forgive me...I cant say I've laughed like that in quite a while."

"Hmph whatever...wh-whats your type?" Kalfa asked in a muffled tone, trying to hide her embarrassment.

"Hmmm my type...I like someone who is proud like me."

"Pfft of course!"

"Fufufu let me finish...someone who is proud but not prideful. Someone who takes ownership in who they are and what they want. Someone who is able to find the beauty within anything, and use that to create miracles...someone like my...fufufu someone who is similar to my brother id say."

Kalfa's eyes briefly showed signs of a gentle surprise. She glanced forwards, observing the slender back of the cheery faced Elf ahead. She seemed to have understood something and couldn't help beholding Elisa with a sympathetic gaze.

"Those are not the worst traits to have. I think a fellow can become quite the catch if he takes prides in the beauty of all the things around him." said Kalfa. Elisa's eyes look to have softened, the corners of her mouth curved into a playful smile.

"And I meant it when I said I admired you. Freedom...that is something your kind have always had...its ironic considering we're supposed to be the chosen race of nature. But it seems the Elves lost what it truly means to be an Elf somewhere along the way..."

Kalfa was surprised to hear those things escaping Elisa's mouth. She too couldn't help but reflect on the problems surrounding her kingdom. This coalition between races was supposed to be the prelude to a disastrous time. Her brother, her father and her friends had all been scattered across the kingdoms in a bid to play their part. Kalfa felt a sadness creeping back into her heart.

Only she suddenly felt a soft embrace against her arm. Elisa was purposely pressing her large breasts against her arm.

"Wh-what are you doing!"

"fufufu what does it look like. We've shared our truest thoughts so that makes us sisters now. Come here let big sister take away all your troubles."

"B-bones?”

The pair had been mindlessly following the two ahead. So when Aubrey mentioned the word Bones. They felt their bodies stiffen

Orions kicked one of the dark large stones away. Indeed, they were bones. But bones of creatures with incredible sized skulls.

Kalfa sniffed at the air a few times.

"They've been dead for quite a long time...what is this place"

"Why would so much be gathered here in one place...could it be something killed them all?" Elisa asked. Kalfa couldnt say anything back, she didnt want to imagine what sort of creature could've caused this scene.

“A graveyard of dead beasts...what a peculiar place this is.” Aubrey spoke scanning around the clearing filled with animal skulls.

“This isn't by chance. Look...Only the skulls remain, but where are the rest of the bones?” Orion spoke to the group. They all carried the same despairing looks as no one held any real answer to it. Orion looked towards the youngest amongst the group.

“Sigh...There's no helping it. We need to rest for a short while. Be careful not to touch any of those bones. And stay alert!” Orion announced.

The company ended up basking beneath an incredibly warm day, surrounded by a thick jungle fit for the company of giants. The mood was sombre compared to the last time they all managed to get some peace. It was to be expected of course considering they were currently attempting to take a moment of respite amongst a graveyard of skulls.

Kalfa and Elisa were taking their time to observe the skulls littered around them. Kalfa didnt seem as bothered as Elisa was. The latter refused to touch a single skull, the sight of them almost made her puke.

"This is so bizarre." Kalfa voiced

"What is? w-what did you find"

"You see every beast has a particular anatomy which is consistent with its lineage. Most of us can tell the lineage of a beast from a single bone from its ribs. It's what we folk at the Rode kingdom pride ourselves in. But these skulls...not only is a single one formed uniquely. I've never seen creatures with such anatomy in my entire life. These beings must be thousands of years old."

"I...I see" Elisa remarked feeling troubled by the entire ordeal. "But doesn't that simply tie in with the enemies we're up against? The demons have existed for so long."

"Yes but demons aren't actually so different from mortals. In fact, an old sage back from my village said demons were cursed and as a result became what they were. You'd at least expect a consistent shape and definition of the bones....but these...these bones are neither human, nor demon...something else entirely."

"Wait Kalfa where has he gone..."

"hmm where has who gone?"

"The boy! the wizard boy he's gone...we've lost him"

Kalfa dropped the dark skull in her grasp and tossed her eyes across the entire place.

"SHIT ! GUYS WE HAVE A PROBLEM!" she voiced loudly across the air

“Wh-whats going on?” Orion demanded as he arrived smelling of aged wine

“He...He’s gone...” Elisa mouthed slowly

“Who is gone?”

“The boy... we can't find him anywhere.”
