Chapter 54 by BlackMonosh
What's next?
Consider those present on the Council Meeting
Back at the new office you and your clones built connected to the main Council Office, you lean back in your chair, relaxing. Your mind, usually tuned to the frequency of combat or pranks, begins to sift through the faces you encountered across the table today. Among the sea of weathered fishermen and stern foremen, a few individuals stood out, not for their political stances, but for the subtle, unspoken signals they sent during the long hours of negotiation.
There was the head of the local Weaver’s Guild, a woman in her early thirties named Guren. She had sat directly across from you, her dark, sharp eyes never once wavering when you spoke of the new trade tariffs. While the men around her bickered over copper and timber, she had maintained a poised, almost predatory stillness. Several times during the meeting, you caught her tracing the rim of her tea cup while looking at the whiskered marks on your cheeks with an expression that wasn't exactly professional. When the meeting broke, she had lingered just a moment too long to thank you for your service to the village, her fingers brushing against your hand as she handed back a signed ledger.
Next, there was Saki, a widow in her late thirties who manages the regional Salt Refinery. She sat with a rigid, dignified posture, her dark hair pulled back into a severe bun that couldn't quite hide the sharp, intelligent curve of her jaw. Having lost her husband to the sea years ago, she carries an air of self-reliance that borders on defiance; yet, throughout the meeting, you noticed her gaze lingering on your hands as you unrolled maps, her stern expression softening into something more **** whenever you spoke of protecting the village's future.
Then there was the young assistant to the Village Elder, a woman named Hana who had been frantically taking notes the entire afternoon. Every time you adjusted your position or spoke with that authoritative, deep tone you’ve developed to psyche people up, her quill would skip across the parchment. She was quiet, almost mousy, but the way she bit her lip whenever you caught her staring spoke of a deep, repressed curiosity. She lives in a small apartment above the archives, an isolated place where there will be less chance of a witness.
Aina, the wife of the Head of the Shipping Union, seem like an unassuning wife being present to assist with the ledgers, but your observation made it clear that she was the true mind behind the numbers. Dressed in a vibrant teal yukata that stood out against the drab stone walls, she possessed a lively, flirtatious energy that her husband, a man twice her age and half as alert, clearly struggled to keep up with. Every time she leaned over to point out a figure on the parchment, she ensured her shoulder brushed against yours, her laughter a melodic, silver sound that seemed to challenge the professional silence of the room.
Even the wife of one of the wealthier harbor masters had made an appearance, ostensibly to bring refreshments, but her gaze had lingered on your shoulders far longer than necessary. You realize now that being the legend himself carries a weight that goes beyond bronze statues and bridge names. You wouldn't have notice her if not for her husband inviting you to his home for dinner, knowing very well everyone else is watching.
Last but not least, Yumi, a young woman who serves as the assistant lead architect for the new residential districts. She is perhaps only a few years older than you, with a face full of freckles and eyes the color of a stormy sea. She didn't speak much during the formal debate, but she watched you with a quiet, intense fascination, her charcoal pencil pausing over her sketches every time you moved.
Maybe you can just call it a day and return to the hotel where you're staying for the month. The onsen there would be good a long soak.
Anyone catches your fancy?
