Concerned

“Nate, why don’t you pair up with Suzy.” She pointed across the room to a girl. Nate knew her, actually no. They had never formally met, but he was aware of her. She was smart. And he was sure she was definitely aware of him now. Mrs. McDowell waved Suzy over. “Nate here needs some tutoring. Why don’t you two go to the library where it is quiet.”

“Uh, sure?” Said Suzy. She turned to Nate looking him over. “Let’s go, I guess.”

Everyone’s eyes were on Nate (as if they ever left) as he got up and left the room.

“Now class,” said Mrs. McDowell. “Those two are going down to the library to study, don’t let that distract you. Now, let’s go over the homework…” But Nate didn’t hear the rest as the voice muffled and the door closed. They looked at each other, and Nate gestured with his hands for her to start walking so she did and he joined her and they walked together through the empty hallways without a word.

Nate could feel her debating if she should ask him. She wondered if there was something she didn’t know, that would make her look stupid for asking. She found the idea to be ridiculous and almost couldn’t stand not knowing. But the teacher was fine with it, so it must be okay, right? It seemed whether or not she asked was up to Nate’s influence and intervention.
